Response to Catlin's Unity Decline Opinion Piece

March 11, 2020

So I just read Catlin's article about the TPU in the Thaecian Journal. Firstly, let me state that I understand this is an opinion piece so does not require the same level of journalistic integrity as a news report. Nonetheless, there are a couple of claims made in the article that are misleading.

1. Catlin says "UNI was never designed to govern." This may be Catlin's opinion, but it is false. When I was still Chairman UNI set up a shadow cabinet with the full intention of running a candidate (myself) in the Prime Ministerial election and filling the cabinet largely with members from that shadow cabinet. As a party, UNI was more prepared to govern than any other. I would include in that comparison the TPU, who despite being in government, had stopped doing much governance by that point.

2. Catlin provides a list of UNI policies that he claims are common to most parties in Thaecia. Included on this list is "Unicameralism referendum". This statement is misleading as it implies that UNI has nothing more to offer on unicameralism than any other party. As far as I'm aware, every other major party supports a referendum as a means to settle the dispute, while UNI supports it as a means to actually achieve unicameralism.
