SQSH Project Team

Get involved in SQSH! We are a free, confidential, and identity-affirming peer support helpline service run by volunteers in the St. Louis LGBTQIA+ community, for the community. We work to serve and strengthen St. Louis - by providing an empathetic listening ear, by connecting callers safely and reliably to LGBTQIA-affirming resources, and by increasing the visibility of LGBTQIA+ concerns, needs, and resources in the St. Louis region.

Open Positions

Operations Team

Treasurer

  • Coordinates responsible and efficient spending of SQSH’s financial resources. Makes a budget for each fiscal year after evaluating the costs of all programs and events. Manages finances including paying for phone bills, purchase orders, and reimbursements. Works with funders and donors. 2 hours a week.

Logistics Coordinator

  • Crowdsources and obtains quotes for logistics that the Helpline needs to function, including technological equipment, office items, and stationery. 2 hours a week.

Fundraising Coordinator

  • Plans and implements community-centered fundraising campaigns for SQSH to collect donations via multiple platforms, including cash, check, Venmo, and GoFundMe, with the goal of financially sustaining SQSH for as long as possible. Time commitment flexible.

Training Team

Curriculum Developer

  • Builds on and improves the existing training curriculum for Helpline Volunteers, with a special focus on integrating multiple, diverse learning styles and pedagogical methods into trainees' learning of LGBTQIA+ specific peer counseling skills. 2 hours a week pre-training, 3-5 hours a week during training season.

Roleplay Writer

  • Writes weekly roleplays based on past calls for Helpline Volunteers to practice their peer counseling skills. A strong understanding of the St. Louis LGBTQIA+ community preferred. 1 hour a week pre-training, 2-4 hours a week during training season.


Outreach Team

Community Partnership Chair

  • Sustains partnerships with SQSH’s Community Partners including (but not limited to) MTUG, the Trans Queer Flat, Black Pride, PROMO, NCADA, Safe Connections, United Way, etc. Works with Community Engagement Chair to coordinate meetings, mutual referral protocols, two-way data exchange, and other collaborations with these community partners. Initiates and follows up on collaborations with other community partners in St. Louis who reach out to us via our outreach email. 2-4 hours a week.

Community Presenter

  • Gives presentations to community partners. Topics include but are not limited to: SQSH as a resource, LGBTQIA+ support tools / peer counseling skills, LGBTQIA-affirming resources, etc. Time commitment flexible.

Creative Team

Social Media Coordinator

  • Crafts social media posts for SQSH's Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram platforms, with a special focus on creating compelling, inclusive, values-driven, and trauma-informed content. Manages SQSH's social media presence to most effectively represent SQSH's mission and goals. Prior experience in social media work preferred but not required. 1-2 hours a week.

Graphic Designer

  • Creates graphics for SQSH to spread the word about our organization, services, goals, and announcements. Special focus on creating compelling, inclusive, values-driven, and trauma-informed content. 2-4 hours a week.


Advisory Team

Clinical Supervisor

  • Requires you to be a licensed clinical social worker, therapist, counselor and/or psychologist. Reviews Helpline materials based on clinical expertise. Debriefs regularly with Helpline Volunteers. Facilitates restoration and healing within SQSH. 2-4 hours a month. Read more here.

Practicum Supervisor

  • Requires you to have an MSW and have graduated at least 2 years ago. Provides supervision and guidance to a social work or counseling student involved with SQSH, paired with you based on mutual interest. Details vary depending on your practicum student's program requirements. 2-4 hours a week.

Practicum Student

  • Requires you to be enrolled in a Social Work or Counseling program. If you are seeking a practicum opportunity as part of your degree requirements, we invite you to do your practicum at SQSH! We will pair you with a practicum supervisor based on mutual interest. Details and time commitment vary based on your program requirements.

SQSHweb Team

Website Coordinator

  • Oversees the development of the SQSH digital platforms (excluding the SQSH Newsletter and social media accounts). Platforms include the SQSH General Site, SQSHBook, the SQSH Volunteer Portals (for New Volunteers, Current Volunteers, and Clinical & Practicum Team), and the SQSH Mobile Site. In charge of the appearance and content composition of each digital platform.

Website Associate

  • Builds on existing SQSH websites (General Site, SQSHBook Site, Volunteer Portals) to keep them updated, accessible, and effective. Familiarity with Google Sites preferred, but any web experience is valuable, and our current SQSHweb team is happy to walk you through how to operate SQSH's websites.

IT Support

  • Supports the Helpline's IT needs, including keeping the phone system up and running, maintaining our phone equipment, and keeping our data and websites secure.

All roles require availability on Saturday 10AM-12PM at least once a month.

Group Philosophy

We believe in deconstructing mainstream society's power structure and dynamics that perpetuate inequalities both within and outside of the LGBTQIA+ community. As such, we are a non-hierarchical organization that values mutual trust and every member's opinion. When you join SQSH's Project Team, you will gain equal say in SQSH's operations as everyone else on the Project Team.


What to expect after you submit your application:

  1. We will email you within two weeks of receiving your application to set up a time to chat with you in person or over the phone.
  2. During the chat, we will ask you questions to get to know you better as a project team member.
  3. Within two weeks after our chat, we will email you to invite you into your new role on the SQSH Project Team, and to our monthly Project Team Meeting (fourth Saturday of the month, 10AM - 12PM).
  4. During the Project Team Meeting, we will introduce you to the team, delegate tasks and roles, update everyone on mutual progress made since the last meeting, and wrap up with to-do items going forward.
  5. In between monthly meetings, we will check in with you regularly to keep you accountable to the tasks you'd committed to. We appreciate your commitment to volunteering with SQSH and want to do everything we can to making being involved with SQSH as fulfilling for you as possible!
