Stop Following Me
π
Who are you, walking lockstep with me?
Why not walk stride ahead so I can be left behind
Or slow down enough so that I can outstrip you?
Give me one clear choice, I beg you.
On this sidewalk too cramped to slip aside,
You saunter down its very center,
Not perfectly straight, not quite skewed,
Tottering in unison with every step of mine,
Never getting behind nor getting aheadβhow vexing.
You, mother holding your childβs hand on the morning commute,
You, wage workers sucking iced coffee in lunch break,
You, pressing elevator buttons with phoneβs corner,
You, off the same bus as I, blocking the path I must take.
Every one of you are innocent
And that is precisely what enrages me.
This vile, misplaced fury,Β
that must have been foisted upon me from who-knows-where,
Finds no rightful exit and sinks its teeth
Into the back of your guiltless back
All around, drains of anger gape wide
In front of me, behind me.
Your innocence itself becomes your crime.
So please, stop following me.
