French Somaliland was a French colonial territory in the Horn of Africa located along the Gulf of Aden, centred on the port city of Djibouti. Established in the late nineteenth century as France consolidated its presence along the Red Sea trade routes, the territory served as an important strategic and commercial outpost linking Africa with the Middle East and Asia. The colony remained under French administration through the colonial period and later became the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas before achieving independence as the Republic of Djibouti in 1977.The postage stamps of French Somaliland reflect its role within the French colonial empire as well as the distinctive landscapes and cultures of the region. Early issues often used general French colonial designs, while later series featured local themes such as desert landscapes, nomadic life, wildlife, and views of Djibouti. Many of these stamps were produced using the high-quality engraving and printing techniques of French security printers, giving them the refined artistic style characteristic of French colonial philately.French Somaliland used the Franc currency system, with 1 Franc divided into 100 Centimes.
