Malaya under the British Military Administration (BMA) was established following the end of Japanese occupation in World War II, spanning from 1945 to 1948. During this transitional period, British military authorities restored civil order and administrative structures across the Malay Peninsula before the formation of the Malayan Union.
The BMA period used existing pre-war Straits Settlements and Malayan issues overprinted with “BMA MALAYA,” reflecting the temporary military governance. These utilitarian overprints, often applied under urgent conditions, are valued for their direct connection to the immediate post-war recovery phase.
The currency system reverted to the pre-war Malayan dollar, replacing the Japanese-issued occupation currency.
