Bulgaria

Bulgaria, located in southeastern Europe, regained its independence from Ottoman rule in 1878 and emerged as a modern nation-state under a constitutional monarchy. Throughout the 20th century, it experienced periods of monarchy, socialism, and democratic transition, each leaving a distinct mark on the country's political and cultural development.

Bulgaria has produced a rich and attractive range of postage stamps. Early issues featured royal portraits and national symbols, while later stamps celebrated historical events, cultural achievements, architecture, and the country's natural heritage. Bulgarian stamps are particularly admired for their detailed engraving, artistic quality, and wide variety of themes.

The country used the Bulgarian Lev = 100 Stotinki as its currency throughout most of its modern history, replacing it with the Euro in 2026.

This stamp comes from Bulgaria's 1970 Cacti series, a set devoted to exotic cactus species cultivated in botanical collections. It depicts Tephrocactus alexanderi var. bruchii, an Argentine cactus known for its segmented stems covered in dense white spines and for producing flowers that are strikingly large in comparison to the size of the plant itself.The species is native to the high-altitude regions of northwestern Argentina, where it grows in arid mountain environments. Its rounded segments detach easily and can root to form new plants, an adaptation that helps it spread in harsh conditions. The pale pink blossom shown on the stamp is characteristic of the species and is often considered its most attractive feature.Bulgaria issued several attractive botanical series during the 1960s and 1970s, and the cactus stamps are notable for combining scientific accuracy with bold, decorative colour schemes. The deep magenta background used here makes the white spines and delicate flower stand out dramatically, giving the stamp a distinctly modern look for the period.
