A Christmas Mystery
By Karleigh S.
It was two days before Christmas. 12:00 to be exact when Kary, the mother, woke up to Arianna screaming. She knew it was not a dream. Her only daughter, who had survived this horrifying act which seemed to have happened every single year on December 23, was screaming.
This year Kary thought it would all be okay. First in 2016, Zara was kidnapped and is now safe with a family in New York City, NY, or so she thought. Then Kary lost her husband in a car crash. She thought it was a silly, but horrible thing and could only happen once. Then two days before Christmas, Marley was shot right in her bed. The murderer and kidnapper were still out there after the Canneys.
Kary jumped out of bed to find her last child gone. She looked at the pictures of her long gone babies after calling 911. Tears filled her eyes. That night was the fourth time in three years she cried black tears. She looked at her long gone family’s presents under the tree. Kary always left them in their place every year. She realized one was missing. She walked around her house and found Arianna’s gift of an Apple watch in her living room by the TV. She was so confused. She drank a thousand cups of coffee, thinking her red, puffy, tear covered eyes were seeing things. She then still saw it and she picked it up. To release her anger she broke it with a sledge hammer.
The next morning, she woke up to her dog with Ari’s second gift, a teddy bear. Kary then realized Arianna was right under her nose. The third morning she found a note saying…“ Arianna has 28 gifts remaining and she will be murdered on the last gift which I prepared myself with a bomb in it. She is right under your nose. You better start searching!!”
Kary was startled. She looked in closets and cupboards. Nothing. She was scared Someone was on her house moving her daughter. She wandered around. Wondering if maybe Zara was there. She was terrified.
At 1:00 a.m. Kary finally headed to bed. The next afternoon, Kary woke up and found her brother walking to the door. He told her to look downstairs. Kary stumbled down the stairs. She found both Ari and Zara. She was relieved. Kary threw away all the gifts. Of course she bought new ones. Kary, Zara, Ari, their new cat Kit, another cat Skye, their dog Bandit, and Kary’s new boyfriend Tyler were all in a new town far away off the coast of Mexico happy and safe. They never have slept on Christmas Eve again.
