On August 3, 1975, the New Orleans SuperDome opened after 4 years of construction and became the largest domed stadium in the world. Constructed on land that had fallen into urban decay and located near a cemetery, the New Orleans SuperDome was built after an agreement between the state of Louisiana and the city of New Orleans was reached. The agreement authorized taxpayer funds for the purpose of constructing a stadium capable of attracting an NFL franchise to the city. (1)
