Language: The Iranun language is part of the Danao language family and is spoken in the Philippines and Malaysia. It's also known as Iranon or Illanun. The Iranun language is closely related to the Maranao language, with which it shares 85% cognation.
Culture: The Iranun are culturally and ethnically related to the Maranao and Maguindanaon, and all three groups are named after the island of Mindanao.
History: The Iranun were traditionally sailors and shipbuilders, and were once known as fierce pirates in the Malay region.
Preserving their culture: The Iranun community has started projects to preserve their language and culture, including developing a written form of their language, a library of mother tongue literature, and a mother tongue preschool program.
