What Rizal Did in United States
April 28, 1888 – Rizal arrived in the United States, landing in San Francisco, California, aboard the Belgic.
His entry was delayed for about a week due to strict quarantine regulations an experience that made him critical of some American immigration policies.
After being cleared, he traveled across major US cities by train, passing through Oakland, Reno, Chicago, Niagara Falls, Albany, and finally New York.
Rizal observed America’s rapid progress, efficiency, and modernity, noting that the country was young yet very advanced in infrastructure and governance.
However, he also noticed racial discrimination, particularly towards Chinese immigrants, which made him conclude that the U.S. had “great liberty, but not for all men.”
May 13, 1888 – Rizal departed from New York aboard the City of Rome bound for London.
Goal
His journey through the U.S. served as an educational observation tour, allowing him to witness democratic institutions, industrial progress, and social inequalities firsthand insights that later influenced his reformist ideas.
