What Rizal Did in United States
May 24, 1888 – Rizal arrived in London, choosing the city for its vast libraries and safe distance from Spanish colonial authorities.
He lived in the home of the Beckett family at 37 Chalcot Crescent, Primrose Hill, adopting a quiet and studious routine.
Rizal spent most of his time researching at the British Museum, where he studied historical documents about the Philippines.
His major scholarly achievement in London was the annotated edition of Antonio de Morga’s Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas a work aimed at correcting Spanish colonial distortions about pre-colonial Filipino culture.
He wrote numerous letters exposing abuses in the Philippines and continued contributing to La Solidaridad, strengthening his role in the Propaganda Movement.
During his stay, he developed close friendships with other expatriates and English acquaintances, including the Beckett sisters.
Though far from the Philippines, London offered him intellectual freedom and access to resources essential for his nationalist work.
Goal
Rizal’s primary objective in London was historical research and scholarly work to restore Filipino national identity, counter colonial narratives, and support peaceful reform through knowledge and truth.
