Maybush Growing Buddies Halloween Fundraising Event at Wimpson Lane

On Friday 26th October the Maybush Growing buddies (Chair; Polly, Secretary; Clare & Lil, Treasurer; Rebecca) from Wimpson Lane had their first fundraising event, a Halloween spectacular! This event was for the community and in-turn to help raise some funds for the new constituted gardening club set up in partnership with Plants For People (Solent Mind, Mayfield Nurseries and Southampton City Council).

It was an action-packed day with apple bobbing, bring and buy sale, fancy dress, raffle, cake sale, piñata and creative wood work with the artist David Mc Diarmid. It also gave the community at Wimpson Lane an opportunity to view the plans for the re-development of a redundant patch of land, they will be developing into a community garden. Many conversations were had with smiles and laughter.

Over 30 residents attended, neighbourhood wardens, Southampton city workers and local councillors.

It was a huge success, bringing the diverse community together and all the efforts of the Maybush Growing Buddies were rewarded as they raised so far £303.97!

JaxArt summer park mural

Thursday 3rd Aug

Jacquie Rolls, of JaxArts and one of the Keepers, presented a free art activity in Watts Park, in the centre of Southampton. Taking inspiration from the 'Kathakali meets Carnival' exhibition being held in the main City Gallery, the activity was based around a large mural using a head and mask combination, as inspired by one of the exhibits. The mural was quite large and the drawing mapped out on a large tarpaulin in black pen. Passing children were then given the task of cutting up pieces of coloured scrap fabric, donated by the 'Scrap Store' and building up the mural using a colour photograph as reference for the completed design. A number of children, some assisted by adults worked on the artwork during the day. In addition some of the organisers of the exhibition also dropped by. Unfortunately the weather, on that summers day, consisted of a number of showers and high winds which made things difficult but eventually the artwork was completed back at the Keepers studio!
