Last winter was unusually cold so we encourage you to start feeding the wild birds now if you would like them to add a splash of colour, song and excitement to your garden.
We're more aware of the darker mornings and evenings now that the clocks just went back an hour.

All wild life will have noticed their foraging time reducing and it's not until after December 21st that the daylight hours start to increase again.

Take a look at our local bird guide or invest in a bird book, wall chart or visit birdwatchireland.ie to discover what species visit. In our garden we're very likely to see Robins, Wrens, Tits, Finches, Collard Doves, Sparrows. Crows frequently scared off the smaller birds so we stopped putting out dried stale bread and they no longer visit.

To encourage a wide range of birds include seeds, peanuts, mealworms, fat balls and suet cakes, kitchen scraps and even dried or fresh fruit to your feeding station.

Provided it is NOT a processed food then wild birds will happily munch on our leftovers. Food scraps on a plate positioned where the cats and rodents can't reach will be devoured quickly. Those halloween pumpkins chopped up also make a great meal.

We think Ireland's climate is often wet but if birds need to search for a drink or a bath during hot summers or frozen winters then a water bath will further entice them to your garden.
