Competition

Take a photo and take part in our Christmas Moment Photo Competition. Over 100 entrants last year for locally sponsored prizes.

We're hoping to do exactly the same this year with the final prize on New Years day simply for capturing your Moment and sharing it with us.

Social Media

The Navan South - Student Community Facebook Group was formed last month.

The forum is for the students / youth of Navan to have their say on any issues they may want to raise and any concerns that may be effecting them in the community.

Volunteer

Our local Order of Malta Ireland - Ambulance Corps - Navan are looking for new members.

"We are especially looking for retirees or people with spare time who would have an interest in driving, all training will be given. We cover lots of sporting, equestrian and musical events and its a great way to meet new people."

We've recently been to 3 local Christmas Markets: Newgrange, Ardboyne and Gaelscoil Éanna.

Trim and Slane Markets will be a new experiences for us and we're even planning a Trip to see the Belfast Markets.

New Facebook Group has formed aimed primarily at the local neighbourhood.

Tree Trim

Johnstown Tidy Towns are engaging tree surgeons to assist clear away branches that are blocking footpaths.

Most Estates within Navan South are not 'taken in charge' by Meath County Council and therefore trees are not being maintained and low branches are a hazard to the elderly and vision impaired.

A very brief opportunity has a risen and therefore work has already begun BUT only over footpaths and from ground level.

Message the group to identify priority areas and offer your help.

Decorations

The Johnstown Roundabout gained sponsorsorship and we asked if there was an opportunity to decorate the tree for Christmas .... but how can we?

There's no electricity supply, solar lights tend to be extremely faint in winter and batteries don't last.

We nearly bought dozens of huge decoration baubles but the recent high winds would have removed them before any antisocial activities had their chance.

If anyone has some ideas, has seen something similar, has solar lighting recommendations we urgently welcome your input.

This is a chance to make a huge positive difference and contribution.

New Years Resolution

Taylors Chubby Chappies and Pink Ladies will be following the 8 week Operation Transformation program in January ..... good news if you're planning to over indulge this Christmas!

Movember Shave

Well done to the 6 chaps who for 30 days grew a moustache to raise funds for St Mary's Special Needs School.

Playground ?

The Council have been discussing the potential for a children's playground 'perhaps' for the green outside the Johnstown School Campus. We're expecting to see plans in January.

Followers of N.S.C.U. Facebook page expressed over 160 comments within a matter of hours with several understandable "Not In My Back Yard" observations together with a few calling for people to await the formal proposals before making more informed responses.

Chaos Again.

The traffic jams have returned with the recent downpours of autumn rain. The roundabout is jammed as it does every winter, albeit for 20 minutes, and travel time along Metges Road from the Kentstown Road to the roundabout is now 10 to 15 minutes between 8:30 and 9am.

You could leave earlier in wet weather to reduce your commute time. HOWEVER the Dunville and Cois Glaisin Estates are not half complete and therefore the number of peak time vehicles will still increase.

We'd like to hear if there is a solution coming from Meath County Council before the Johnstown North land is developed.

Faster WiFi.

How many thought they would get GBs speed on their smartphone with the new internet? We've been testing out SIRO internet and asked for your speedtest results.

We wonder if you'll sign up for it and if you do have it would you recommend it?

Protests

Residents have created a Facebook Page to "Save Old Athlumney Castle Wall and 22 of Navan’s Oldest Trees".

Meath County Council proposed a cycle path into the Athlumney Castle Estate from Kentstown Road at the School. This requires relocating a portion of wall along Old Convent Road and the removal of the mature trees.

Toppled

It was really sad to see the high winds coupled with weakened old roots bring down one of the old trees in front of the Johnstown School Campus.

Luckily it came down at night and no one was injured. Well done to a local resident who cleared debris off the road especially on what turned out to be a dreadful day for traffic.

It's Finished!

Mayor Jim Holloway officially opened the cantilever pedestrian and cycle bridge at the end of November.

Open the 360 Google Street View and take a quick walk over the bridge.

More plans for cycle paths throughout Navan are underway with schemes released for the areas of Beechmount Avenue and Athlumney Castle, New proposals are expected for the Dublin Road and Flower Hill areas.

We'll have our quarterly review catch up with all the local building sites in January.

Cash Injection

In late Nov it was announced that €3.7m has been allocated to fund Navan regeneration projects with Flowerhill, Abbey Road, Kenstown Road and Railway Street being among the areas specifically named to receive attention.

We'll review those projects that might have an impact on the Navan South Area as and when proposals are made.

Potential Link Road

We mentioned this potential Part 8 proposal in Sept News. It forms part of what we're referring to as the links required to create a future Navan Ring Road. Read the Feb article too about the Blackwater Park link proposal.

Anything which reduces the traffic congestion and enables us to navigate Navan should be a good thing but there's always a catch. We can see potential future 'Housing Development' sites alongside the route which are urgently needed but adds to the congestion too.

Shape up for Santa

Good Luck to the 54 members who are participating in the O'Briens Fat Boys & Ladybirds final weigh-in Friday Dec 14th in their bid to 'Shape up for Santa'.

Congratulations to Shamey Friel recently named Player of The Year at O'Briens Golf Society.

They have their AGM Dec and the new season members are invited to Join.

The Panto

As predicted the St Mary's Musical Society production at The Solstice Arts Centre has SOLD OUT but keep an eye out for any last minute returned tickets to the box office.

We were lucky enough to buy tickets several weeks ago and hopefully we'll be allowed a picture or too on the night for a future edition edition review.
