April 12, 2025 - Nearly 1 Million Children Told to Avoid Going Outside on Saturday in Houston, Texas - Nearly 1 million children in Texas have been advised to limit outdoor activity on Saturday as major urban areas brace for potentially unhealthy air conditions. An air quality forecast from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows large portions of the state, including Houston, El Paso, and Austin, falling into the "orange" zone, signaling pollution levels that are "unhealthy for sensitive groups. "Health officials define sensitive groups to include children, older adults, and individuals with preexisting respiratory conditions. The latest data from the U.S. Census shows the combined population of children under 18 in Houston and Austin exceeds 780,000. El Paso also is expecting air quality into the "orange zone." U.S. Census data anticipates there are approximately 169,000 children under 18 in El Paso. Children are especially vulnerable to ozone pollution, which forms when nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds react in sunlight. The resulting ground-level ozone can trigger a range of health issues, including coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing, even in otherwise healthy children. For those with asthma, the consequences can be more severe. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has issued Ozone Action Day alerts for April 12 across several major metropolitan areas, including Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, and San Antonio. These alerts are triggered when ozone levels are expected to exceed 100 on the EPA's Air Quality Index (AQI), crossing into the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" range. Source

February 8, 2025 - Americans say mysterious fog with 'chemical smell' is making them sick just minutes after exposure - People across the US are reporting a mysterious fog with a 'chemical smell' that they believe is making them sick within minutes of exposure. Reports of the 'unnatural' fog began late December in parts of Texas, Wisconsin, Iowa, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, North Dakota, Florida, and Minnesota. Locals have flooded social media with videos explaining their 'symptoms' since the fog appeared in their area, which have included coughing, sore throat, congestion, eye irritation, lethargy, loss of appetite and gut issues. A Florida resident told DailyMail.com that she stopped at a gas station for about 10 minutes and began feeling ill.m 'Within about and hour, I kept sneezing over and over for about three hours, and my eyes were really puffy,' she said. 'I got very warm and I felt like I had a fever, and my stomach was cramping.' One TikTok user, who goes by 'Rusky,' said he has also been experiencing symptoms: 'Sore throat, coughing, tired, lethargic — I'm still recovering from it.' He stated in the video that all of his symptoms are a direct result of the fog. But aside from the reports, experts have stated that there is no evidence to suggest that this 'sickness-causing' fog is anything but a co-occurrence of a natural weather event and the viruses that are especially common this time of year. Although the game will be held indoors, fans traveling to New Orleans to see the Kansas City Chiefs face off against the Philadelphia Eagles could have a very difficult time getting there as driving conditions may turn deadly. While super fog is uncommon, it's not unheard of, especially in New Orleans. This city typically experiences two super fog events per year. Tourism officials predict roughly 100,000 people to travel to New Orleans for the Super Bowl this weekend. Meteorologists predict the super fog could form across southeastern Louisiana the next two days leading up to and including Super Bowl Sunday. Source
December 29, 2025 - Flooding: California & Washington states - Both states’ flooding issues stem from atmospheric river systems—long, moisture-rich storm streams that dump enormous amounts of rain quickly when they hit land — which have become more frequent and intense in recent years.
California Flood Situation: Southern California, especially the Los Angeles region and nearby mountain communities, was hit by an intense atmospheric river storm over the Christmas period, bringing historic rainfall totals in spots — amounts in some areas were comparable to a large fraction of the city’s typical annual rainfall in just a few days. This deluge caused widespread flash flooding, mudslides, and debris flows, particularly in areas previously scarred by wildfires where slopes were unstable. Rescue operations were active, with emergency crews helping stranded residents and conducting water rescues. There were several fatalities and major travel disruptions due to slick conditions and flooded roads. Evacuations and flood watches were issued in vulnerable zones, and state officials declared a state of emergency to unlock additional resources. Even as the rains eased, the risk of localized flooding and mudslides remained with unsettled weather patterns continuing. Homes and vehicles damaged by mud and floodwaters. Evacuation orders in some mountain and foothill areas. Ongoing flood advisories and elevated alert levels from the National Weather Service.
Washington State Flood Situation - Western Washington experienced one of its most severe flooding events in recent memory due to an extended atmospheric river that drenched lowlands and river basins, leading to historic river rises and widespread inundation. State authorities declared a statewide emergency, evacuations were ordered for tens of thousands of residents, and major transportation corridors were closed due to washouts and flood damage. Portions of U.S. Highway 2 that were washed out are beginning to reopen as repair and cleanup efforts progress. In a sign of ongoing infrastructure and public health stress, health officials warned about possible rats surfacing through toilets and plumbing systems in some flooded areas — a consequence of sewer systems being overwhelmed.
Response: Washington deployed Guard and emergency response teams and received mutual-aid support, including California rescue personnel helping with swift-water operations.
Impact highlights: Rivers and lowland areas saw historically high levels of flooding. Large numbers of homes and communities affected by floodwaters and evacuations. Road closures and disrupted transportation networks.
July 6, 2025 - Central Texas Floods: at least 70 people dead, officials say, as Trump declares major disaster - A Travis County official said four people had died from the flooding there, with 13 unaccounted for, and officials reported another death in Kendall County. The Burnet County Sheriff's office reported two fatalities. A woman was found dead in her submerged car in the city of San Angelo in Tom Green County, the police chief said. Officials said on Saturday that more than 850 people had been rescued, including some clinging to trees, after a sudden storm dumped up to 15 inches (38 cm) of rain across the region, about 85 miles (140 km) northwest of San Antonio. It was unclear exactly how many people in the area were still missing. The National Weather Service issued flood warnings and advisories for central Texas that were to last until 4:15 p.m. local time (2115 GMT) as rains fell, potentially complicating rescue efforts.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency was activated on Sunday and is deploying resources to first responders in Texas after President Donald Trump issued a major disaster declaration, the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement. United States Coast Guard helicopters and planes are helping the search and rescue efforts, DHS said.
Trump has previously outlined plans to scale back the federal government's role in responding to natural disasters, leaving states to shoulder more of the burden themselves. Some experts questioned whether cuts to the federal workforce by the Trump administration, including to the agency that oversees the National Weather Service, led to a failure by officials to accurately predict the severity of the floods and issue appropriate warnings ahead of the storm. Trump's administration has overseen thousands of job cuts from the National Weather Service's parent agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, leaving many weather offices understaffed, said former NOAA director Rick Spinrad.
The disaster unfolded rapidly on Friday morning as heavier-than-forecast rain drove river waters rapidly to as high as 29 feet (9 meters). A day after the disaster struck, the summer camp was a scene of devastation. Inside one cabin, mud lines indicating how high the water had risen were at least six feet (1.83 m) from the floor. Bed frames, mattresses and personal belongings caked with mud were scattered inside. Some buildings had broken windows, one had a missing wall.

As of May 14, 2024, some scientists are considering a Category 6 hurricane classification for the "mega-hurricane era". A Category 6 hurricane would have sustained winds of at least 192 miles per hour, which is faster than a racing car in a straight line. With catastrophic storms regularly blowing past the 157-mph threshold, some scientists argue, the Saffir-Simpson scale (up to a Category 5) no longer adequately conveys the threat the biggest hurricanes present. Hurricanes have become more intense, with stronger winds and heavier rainfall. Related Article

10/4/2024: Strongest solar flare since 2005 erupts: Will it impact Earth? The largest solar flare recorded since 2017 erupted Thursday morning, marking the latest episode in an active period for the sun. The eruption happened shortly after 8 a.m. ET, according to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center. Flares like this can last“ minutes to hours” and are classified based on their strength. Solar flares are capable of impacting high-frequency communication bands and radio signals, as well as electrical grids and navigational systems. They are also often accompanied by coronal mass ejections(CMEs), which are explosions of plasma and magnetic material from the sun. Bill Murtagh, program coordinator for the SWPC and seasoned space weather forecaster, previously told Nexstar that CMEs are “essentially the Sun shooting a magnet out into space.” The SWPC has already issued a geomagnetic storm watch for the weekend. The watches are considered G3, or strong, on the five-point scale used to categorize a geomagnetic storm’s strength. The agency says there may be “limited, minor effects to some technological infrastructure possible, but mainly mitigatable.” U.S. power grid operators are kept well-informed about the potential impacts of space weather, SWPC Service Coordinator Shawn Dahl previously told Nexstar.
