October 2, 2025 - Reports of explosions at a Chevron refinery in California that occurred last night - The explosions took place at the Chevron refinery in Richmond, California, which is one of the largest oil refineries in the U.S. The facility processes large amounts of crude oil into gasoline, diesel, and other refined products.
The exact cause of the explosion has not yet been officially confirmed, but there have been early reports indicating it may have been related to equipment malfunction, a fire, or a failure in one of the refinery’s processing units. Refinery explosions and fires are not uncommon due to the volatile materials used in refining. Chevron has acknowledged the incident and stated that they are investigating the cause, but further details are pending as they assess the situation.
Early reports suggest no fatalities, but there are several injuries, some of which could be serious. Emergency responders have been deployed to the site, and there have been evacuations of nearby areas as a precautionary measure. Local hospitals have been placed on alert to treat potential injuries related to the explosion.
The refinery’s operations have been temporarily suspended, and it could take several weeks to fully assess the damage and restart operations, depending on the scale of the explosion. The explosion may affect the local supply of gasoline and other refined products, although the broader impact on fuel prices has not yet been assessed.
Air quality has been a concern, with toxic fumes released during the explosion. Local authorities are monitoring air quality levels and have issued warnings for residents in nearby areas. Chevron has stated it is coordinating with environmental agencies to address any potential environmental risks.
Local authorities, including fire departments and hazmat teams, are continuing to battle smaller fires and secure the area. Chevron is working closely with federal regulators and local officials to manage the aftermath of the explosion. Investigations will likely be conducted by both Chevron and federal authorities (such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)) to determine the exact cause of the explosion and whether any safety regulations were violated.

Memphis, Tennessee: The National Guard has also been deployed to Memphis with the support of the state's Republican governor.
October 3, 2025 - U.S. cities with federal/military presence aimed at crime control or safety:
Los Angeles, CA - National Guard and some federalized forces deployed earlier this year for immigration and protest-related operations. Focus: protection of federal facilities and border-related enforcement. Impact on overall city crime is debated; primarily near federal sites.
Washington, D.C. - Federalized National Guard and other federal forces deployed to secure federal buildings and tourist areas. Administration cites arrests and site security; D.C. crime rates were already historically low.
Portland, OR - Federal troops and agents deployed to protect ICE/federal facilities amid protests. Deployment challenged legally by city and state officials. Focused mostly on protecting federal sites, not general city policing.
Memphis, TN - Increased federal law enforcement presence reported in September/October 2025. Focused on high-crime areas and support to local police.
Chicago, IL - Large-scale federal enforcement actions (ICE, FBI, ATF, Border Patrol) targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal records, such as the September 2025 raids in South Shore. Trump administration requested 100 National Guard troops to protect ICE personnel/facilities; deployment opposed by Governor Pritzker. Local crime rates are declining, with homicides down ~30% and shootings down ~39% in early 2025, suggesting federal/military presence is more targeted at immigration enforcement than general crime suppression.
Important context for all cities: These deployments primarily protect federal facilities or specific operations, not general citywide law enforcement. Active-duty military involvement in routine policing is limited by Posse Comitatus law. Effects on overall city crime are often minimal or disputed.
September 3, 2025: President Trump indicated that Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry is open to receiving federal assistance from the National Guard. Shortly after the President's remarks, Governor Landry confirmed this in a social media post, stating he would accept federal support "from New Orleans to Shreveport!". Speaking from the Oval Office, President Trump suggested he might send the National Guard to New Orleans, framing it as an alternative to deploying troops in Chicago, where local leaders have objected. As a Republican governor, Landry has aligned with the President, indicating a willingness to accept federal intervention to address what he called an "issue" with crime. The Democratic city leaders of New Orleans have opposed the idea. In a statement, City Council President JP Morrell called the plan "ridiculous," noted that crime has been trending downward, and said that the police department is "doing a great job with the existing resources they have". Trump stated that sending the Guard to New Orleans would be "easier than D.C." and that his administration could "straighten that out in about two weeks"
September 2, 2025: President Trump confirmed his intent to send the National Guard to Chicago but did not specify a timeline. Staging of federal agents: Governor Pritzker and Mayor Johnson have stated that federal agents and military vehicles have already begun staging on federal property in the area, including the Naval Station Great Lakes in North Chicago. Local opposition: Mayor Johnson has issued an executive order called the "Protecting Chicago Initiative" to legally challenge any unauthorized deployment. The governor and mayor both insist that there is no emergency warranting federal intervention and that the move is politically motivated.
The political conflict
Federal perspective: President Trump has repeatedly cited Chicago's crime statistics, particularly after a recent holiday weekend, as justification for federal intervention. He has framed the move as necessary to address what he called a "hell hole" and indicated his willingness to proceed without the state's request for aid.
State and city pushback: Governor Pritzker and Mayor Johnson have vocally condemned the plan, calling it unconstitutional, illegal, and politically driven. They cite recent local crime data, showing a decline in some categories, and argue that the deployment could worsen tensions and is not about public safety. Pritzker has also warned that the deployment may coincide with increased immigration enforcement by federal agencies like ICE.
A federal judge in California recently ruled that the Trump administration acted illegally by sending the National Guard to Los Angeles to quell immigration protests. The administration is expected to appeal, but local officials in Chicago plan to use this precedent in their legal challenges.
September 2, 2025 - Mayor Muriel Bowser issued an executive order to indefinitely extend cooperation with federal law enforcement agencies for enhanced efforts in D.C., including formalizing the "Safe and Beautiful Emergency Operations Center" to coordinate with agencies like the FBI, Secret Service, and Marshals Service, and requiring federal officers to display identification and avoid masks during their operations. This order follows the expiration of a federal mandate for enhanced law enforcement presence, allowing for continued cooperation and planning for post-emergency activities such as public safety, addressing homelessness, and beautification.
August 19, 2025 - National Guard troops are currently deployed in Washington D.C., as of August 19, 2025. This deployment is part of a series of actions taken by President Donald Trump's administration, which began in early August with the activation of the D.C. National Guard and the federalization of the Metropolitan Police Department. The stated reason for the deployment is to address perceived rising crime rates in the city, according to the Center for American Progress. Several Republican-led states have also answered the Trump administration's call to send their National Guard troops to D.C., further expanding the military presence. This includes units from Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, West Virginia, South Carolina, and Ohio. However, the deployment has been met with controversy, with critics, including D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, questioning the necessity of the deployment and arguing that crime rates are not as high as the Trump administration claims. According to the BBC, D.C. police statistics show a decrease in violent crime this year compared to the previous year. Legal challenges have also been raised regarding the legality of deploying out-of-state National Guard troops in a non-consenting jurisdiction like D.C. without invoking the Insurrection Act, according to the Brennan Center for Justice.
August 10, 2025 - President Trump has announced a press conference at the White House on Monday, August 11, 2025, where he stated that he would unveil plans that will "essentially, stop violent crime" in Washington, D.C.. This comes amidst a broader effort launched by the White House to increase federal law enforcement presence across the city as part of a crackdown on crime, according to CNBC. The idea of federalizing D.C. has been discussed by Trump in the past, and he has recently renewed threats to do so if local officials don't "get their act together" on crime. However, fully federalizing the city would likely require Congress to repeal the 1973 Home Rule Act, which gave D.C. residents the power to elect their own local government, notes CBS News. It's important to note that D.C. police data indicates that violent crime in the city is actually down 26% this year compared to 2024, including decreases in homicides, robberies, and assaults. This contrasts with Trump's claims that the city's crime is "out of control". It's currently unclear exactly what the president will announce at the Monday press conference, but it is expected to involve addressing crime and potentially the city's homeless population.
August 6, 2025 - Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to federalize Washington D.C., effectively taking control of its local government and police force. He views the city as "filthy and crime-ridden" and believes it is "horribly run". His latest calls for federalization came on Tuesday, August 5th, following an attack on a former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) staffer, Edward Coristine, in an attempted carjacking. On Wednesday, August 6th, Trump reiterated his intentions, stating that he is considering deploying the National Guard and federalizing the D.C. police department due to the "ridiculous" crime rates. However, it is crucial to understand that federalizing D.C. by executive action is not possible. According to The Washington Post, Trump cannot unilaterally overturn Home Rule, the system that grants D.C. residents limited self-governance and allows them to elect their own local officials. Any attempt to do so would require an act of Congress, and Democrats could block such legislation through the filibuster. While Trump cannot directly federalize D.C. through executive action, he does possess certain powers to influence local governance:
National Guard: He has the authority to deploy the D.C. National Guard without the consent of local officials.
Police Force: He can temporarily take over the D.C. police force for up to 30 days in emergency situations, requiring congressional approval for longer deployments.
Executive Orders: He has issued executive orders targeting D.C., including the "D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force," focused on crime, homelessness, and quality-of-life issues.
Congressional Oversight: Congress retains oversight over D.C.'s budget and can overturn laws passed by the D.C. Council, according to NPR.
The debate surrounding D.C.'s governance is ongoing. While Trump and some Republicans advocate for increased federal control or even the repeal of Home Rule, many, including D.C. residents and Democrats, support full statehood to ensure self-determination and equal representation
June 23, 2025 - Military Tanks Discovered at Port of Los Angeles, Concealed Amid Shipping Containers - Aerial footage reveals multiple military tanks tucked away behind massive shipping containers at the Port of Los Angeles, one of the busiest ports in the U.S. The tanks, partially covered with tarps, have sparked intense speculation about their purpose. Sources suggest they could be deployed to safeguard the port against potential threats, though no official statement has confirmed this.
Recent reports indicate heightened security concerns at key U.S. infrastructure sites, with the Port of Los Angeles handling roughly 31% of U.S. ocean trade alongside the nearby Port of Long Beach.
Social media posts on X have fueled discussions, with some claiming the tanks are a proactive measure amid global tensions, though these remain unverified. Earlier this month, posts on X also noted 38 M1A2T Abrams tanks and 4 M88A2 recovery vehicles at the port, reportedly prepared for shipment to Taiwan as part of a U.S.-Taiwan defense agreement.
Authorities have not disclosed details about the tanks’ presence or intended use, leaving room for speculation about whether they’re for domestic security or international deployment. Stay tuned for updates as this story develops.
December 29, 2025 - Current Threat Picture for NYE - No specific credible terror threat has been publicly identified for the Times Square ball drop — officials say there’s nothing imminent. NYPD has significantly increased security because of the broader “heightened threat environment” tied to global Middle East tensions. Elite units, bomb-sniffing dogs, drones, and aerial surveillance will be deployed, and enhanced street closures are in place. Federal analysts continue to warn that lone-wolf attackers and small extremist cells could target large crowds due to the high visibility of NYE events. Domestic Plot Disruptions - FBI recently foiled an NYE-related terror plot in Los Angeles involving a far-left, anti-government group. A separate disruption reportedly involved suspects plotting bombing attacks across multiple locations in the Los Angeles region, though coverage varies and these appear to be in custody. In a social media post, Patel said multiple people were arrested. "Through swift action and close coordination with our local partners, a potential act of terror was stopped before it could unfold," Patel said in a statement. "The vigilance of this FBI prevented what could have been a tragic attack — and thanks to their dedication, Michigan will have a safe and happy Halloween." A spokesperson for the FBI field office in Detroit told CBS News that FBI agents were in the cities of Dearborn and Inkster on Friday, "conducting law enforcement activities." They did not offer any additional information on the investigation but said there is "no current threat to public safety." A law enforcement source told CBS News that two teenagers were arrested and others are being questioned in connection with the alleged foiled attack.
June 4, 2025 - Two Chinese nationals, Yunqing Jian and Zunyong Liu, have been charged by U.S. federal authorities for allegedly smuggling a dangerous biological pathogen into the United States. The pathogen, Fusarium graminearum, is a toxic fungus known to cause "head blight" in crops such as wheat, barley, maize, and rice, leading to significant agricultural damage. It also produces toxins that can harm humans and animals, causing symptoms like vomiting, liver damage, and reproductive defects.
The incident came to light when Liu was intercepted at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in July 2024, carrying suspicious plant material. Upon investigation, he admitted the material was intended for research at a University of Michigan laboratory where Jian, his girlfriend, worked. The lab did not possess the necessary federal permits to handle such hazardous materials.
Further investigation revealed communications between the two suggesting prior knowledge and handling of the pathogen at the lab. Jian, a member of the Chinese Communist Party, had previously received funding from the Chinese government for research on this pathogen. Both individuals face multiple charges, including conspiracy, smuggling, making false statements, and visa fraud. Jian is currently in U.S. custody awaiting a bond hearing, while Liu was returned to China and is unlikely to be extradited due to the absence of a U.S.–China extradition treaty. This case has raised significant national security concerns, highlighting vulnerabilities in biosecurity and the potential for agroterrorism threats.
February 20, 2025 - The FBI has issued a warning about a newly discovered pedophilic, Satanist extortion cult targeting children online using platforms including Roblox, Discord, Twitch, Soundcloud, and Telegram to find new victims. The FBI said in their public notice that the cult uses many names, including 676, 764, CVLT, Court, Kaskar, Harm Nation, Leak Society, and H3ll, but “continuously evolve and form subgroups under different monikers.” “To gain access to a majority of these groups, prospective members are required to live-stream or upload videos depicting their minor victims harming animals or committing self-harm, suicide, murder, or other acts of violence,” the FBI said. “The key motivators of these groups are to gain notoriety and rise in status within their groups.” According to the FBI notice, the groups target minors between the ages of 8 and 17 years old, especially LGBTQ+ youth, racial minorities, and those who struggle with a variety of mental health issues, such as depression and suicidal ideation. “The groups use extortion and blackmail tactics, such as threatening to SWAT or DOX the minor victims, if they do not comply with the groups’ requests, manipulate and extort minors into producing CSAM and videos depicting animal cruelty and self-harm,” the FBI warned. The cult is linked to high-profile crimes, including a German teenager accused of murdering his foster family in Romania. Source

Maj. Gen. Ryan Janovic, the commanding general over the Cyber Center of Excellence at Fort Eisenhower, said the shooting, which took place in the housing area, was an isolated incident. “This morning at approximately 7:50 I closed the gates of Fort Eisenhower in immediate response to a shooting incident that regrettably, ultimately claimed the life of one person,” Janovic said. “The victim’s name or association will not be shared until we have property notified the next of kin. The family deserves time to process this tragedy. Importantly, all indications suggest this was an isolated incident and there is no remaining threat to our community. 10/5/2024: FBI, DHS warn of possible violence on Oct. 7 anniversary - The one-year anniversary of Hamas’ attack on Israeli civilians and the ensuing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza may be “a motivating factor for violent extremists and hate crime perpetrators to engage in violence,” the FBI and Department of Homeland Security warned Friday. The statement said that Jewish, Muslim or Arab venues such as synagogues and mosques “present attractive targets for violent attacks or for hoax threats by a variety of threat actors.” The agencies also say the threat is not only from organized foreign terrorist groups, but from individuals. They say that online messaging highlighting the Oct. 7 anniversary could inspire people to act alone, attacking with little or no warning. In a separate notice, the FBI said that “it is essential to be watchful for threats against Jewish, Muslim, and Arab communities and institutions and to immediately contact law enforcement to report any suspicious activity.” DHS also issued its annual threat assessment earlier this week, listing conflict in the Middle East and the upcoming election as contributing factors to a high threat level going into 2025. 8/24/2024: FBI Issues warning on Elevated Threats Against America on Multiple Fronts - From cybercrime to terrorism, FBI director says America faces many elevated threats 'all at once'. The head of the FBI says America is facing heightened threats from many corners at a time when law enforcement agencies are struggling. Christopher Wray said in an exclusive interview, adding that he is “hard pressed to think of a time in my career where so many different kinds of threats are all elevated at once.” Wray spoke Wednesday with The Associated Press while visiting the Minneapolis field office to talk about partnerships between law enforcement agencies and also with other entities. His remarks come as the FBI confronts heightened concerns over terrorism, both domestic and international, as well as Chinese espionage and intellectual property theft and foreign election interference. “I worry about the combination of that many threats being elevated at once, with the challenges facing the men and women in law enforcement more generally,” Wray said at the office in the suburb of Brooklyn Center. “And the one thing that I think helps bridge those two challenges is partnerships. That’s how we get through. It is by all working together.” Source

7/24/2024: FBI director Christopher wary announced that they are increasingly concerned about coordinated foreign terrorist attack in the U.S. - FBI nervous about Russian-style concert terrorist attack in U.S. FBI Director Christopher Wray told Congress on Wednesday that he’s worried that terrorists have sneaked across the border and may be plotting a terrorist attack like the ISIS raid on a concert hall in Russia this year. Mr. Wray said he’s “increasingly concerned” about terrorist attacks on what security experts call “soft targets” — places where average Americans gather. He tied that fear to the surge of illegal immigrants at the border in recent years, saying he’s worried about who has entered undetected. The director said he can’t estimate how many foreign terrorists are in the country, adding that not all of them are border entries. “We are increasingly concerned about the possibility not just of a foreign terrorist attack, which is very much a concern, but even the potential for a coordinated foreign terrorist attack, perhaps like what we’ve seen against the concert hall in Russia,” Mr. Wray told the House Judiciary Committee. The other recent bodies are largely unidentified (4 of the 6 in the last two weeks) or identity is private pending family contact. (Note: New reports indicate there has been 14 people found dead in these Bayous so far in 2025)

Houston officials — including Mayor John Whitmire and Police Chief Noe Diaz Jr. — have strongly stated that there is no evidence linking the cases, and no sign of foul play that would suggest a serial killer is operating.

He used a fake police-style SUV and wore tactical gear, body armor, and a badge to pose as an officer during the attacks. At the suspect’s vehicle, law enforcement discovered manifests including: A manifesto and handwritten list of nearly 70 names—including Minnesota lawmakers, abortion providers, and advocacy figures—with Governor Walz, Rep. Ilhan Omar, Sen. Tina Smith, and Attorney General Keith Ellison among those on the hit list. 'No Kings' protest flyers, linking the incident to anti-Trump demonstrations scheduled for that day.
