The proposed trade between Santa Fe and Washington caused quite a stir in the World Chat, so I decided to take a look and see what the fuss was about. Here's a quick look at the proposed deal:
Now let's take a more in depth look at each piece involved:
TO WASHINGTON
Danny Walton: +3 WAR value and $1.2M salary = +$7.8M surplus value
Yovani Prieto: -2 WAR value and $878k salary = -$6.9M surplus value
Reymond Limon: +1.5 WAR value and $3.3M salary = $1.2M surplus value
$4M cash = $4M surplus value
Total surplus value of $6.1M
TO SANTA FE
Jung Miyakazi: +7 WAR value and $0.027M salary = +$20.973M surplus value
Juan Mendoza: -7 WAR value and $2.5M salary = -$23.5M surplus value
Total surplus value of -$2.527M
The difference between the two surplus values is about $8.6M when you look at this season only, which is lopsided but not vetoable. However, Miyakazi is going to be a superstar for years to come and the Washington owner had previously requested that trades not be sent his way...in the end, I can understand both points of view but as someone who traded a future superstar in my first season of HBD and have long regretted it (both for myself and that franchise) I still think the veto was the right way to go.
