BARTIMOS: Pray forgive my bluntness, Your Grace, but talk of men is moot. Your cause owns a power that has not been seen in this world since the days of old Valyria. Dragons!
RHAENYRA: The Greens have dragons as well.
DAEMON: They have three adults, by my count. We have Syrax, Caraxes, and Meleys. Your sons have Vermax, Arrax, and Tyraxes. Baela has Moondancer.
RHAENYRA: Daemon, none of our dragons have been to war.
DAEMON: There are also unclaimed dragons. Seasmoke still resides on Driftmark. Vermithor and Silverwing dwell on the Dragonmont, still riderless. Then there are the three wild dragons, all of whom nest here.
RHAENYRA: And who is to ride them?
DAEMON: Dragonstone has 13 to their 4. I also have a score of eggs incubating in the Dragonmont.
- House of the Dragon Season 1 Episode 10 "The Black Queen"
RHAENYRA: I need dragons.
JACE: We have no derf of dragons. We have two large enough to stand against Vhagar. They are called Vermithor and Silverwing, and they sleep just beneath our feet.
RHAENYRA: Yes if only they had riders, none could stand against me.
- House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 5 "Regent"
ULF: I'll take him on myself. Silverwing's a goer, she is. We're afraid of nothing.
- House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 8 "The Queen Who Ever Was"
“Silverwing was the stately old dragon of the good Queen Alysanne,” Condal said. “I described her as the Britannia, the ship that Queen Elizabeth did her progresses on. She certainly did not do any fighting. She was the Concorde.”

Silverwing is also large but has a slender silhouette and silver scales that shine in the light.
- Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon: Inside the Creation of a Targaryen Dynasty
As a Look Development Artist at Rodeo FX for House of the Dragon Season 2, I had the privilege of bringing the majestic Silverwing to life, alongside Vermax. This presented a unique set of challenges, primarily driven by Silverwing's immense size and the desire to capture a specific, elusive silvery shimmer. One of the biggest hurdles was the sheer scale of the dragon. In modeling it was difficult for the artist to create a very high level of detail over the whole surface of the dragon.
So it was decided that the overall shape would be handled by the modeler while the fine detail needed for close-ups would be added by my texturing colleague in Mari. She projected additional detail using an alligator skin scan.
The client's vision for Silverwing's silvery effect was, initially, rather vague. They envisioned a shimmering quality, reminiscent of fish scales, but lacked concrete references of how it was implemented. This ambiguity led to a lot of back-and-forth testing. We collaborated with the modeling team to create a scalable scale pattern in Substance Designer, which was then applied in Mari. I used masks to control the placement of these scales, ultimately concentrating them on the phalanx as per the client's final vision.
The wings presented their own set of challenges. Realistically, dragon wings of Silverwing's size would be quite thick, limiting the amount of subsurface scattering. However, the collective image of dragon wings often aligns more with the thinner, more translucent wings of bats. Balancing realism with artistic vision and client expectations required careful manipulation of SSS through masking. Even the color of the wing subsurface was a point of discussion. Should it be a realistic red/orange, reflecting blood flow, or a more visually appealing blue? I opted for a realistic red/orange, leaving further adjustments to the compositing team.
Special attention was given to the horns, as they act as a sort of crown. We added brighter edges to the ridges to improve readability from a distance. Buffalo horns served as a key refe- rence for material behavior and dirt accumulation.
Her canines are about the size of a human forearm. At this scale, it was important to strike a balance between the visually appealing, CG-polished look that audiences subconsciously expect and the raw realism of large teeth, which can sometimes feel unsettling. Hippo teeth provided a useful reference, helping us refine subsurface scattering values that felt natural without breaking the sense of scale for Silverwing.
Shimmering scales; The shimmering silvery effect; The effect is reminiscent of fish scales. It is treated as a build up of mother-of-pearl at the tip of the scales. The idea is that they are catching glints of light at certain angles and create a shimmering effect when Silverwing moves or flaps her wings. The client decided for the scales to be restricted to key areas: the phalanx, forearms, shoulders, neck and back. The idea of putting them on the wing membranes was discarded in order to keep some uniformity with the other dragons in the series
What I can tell you though is on the CG side we were told to make her look old,
respectable and dignified like Queen Elizabeth but still fierce.
We drew inspiration from crocodiles, different lizard species like the giant girdled lizard and fish scales/mother of pearl for the shimmering on parts of her wings and back. There was a lot of debate on how to think her "silvery" aspect, especially on the wings since that's where she gets her name from. Like, is that effect only on the membranes or only on the bat-like fingers. The director didn't want the dragon to feel too metallic so they ended up asking that the shimmering (fish like scales) be only on the scaly fingery parts of the wings.
For her horns we looked at Ibex and Buffalos to get the right feel. The eyes are inspired from crocodile and tokay gecko iris. It was a ton of fun to work on all those aspects and especially to be with a team of talented and motivated artist that wanted to give the very best of themselves on this dragon.
-
For example in the concept art you can see that Silverwing used to have fangs coming out of her mouth. However they were later removed because the client wasn't really convinced of her look when she opened her mouth. -
This was in stark contrast to Silverwing, another dragon featured later in the season, who was depicted as regal, slow-moving, and exuding elegance and control. “Silverwing, as opposed to our punk, Moondancer, is supposed to be... fearless, super strong, yet elegant and really smart,” Pelletier elaborated, highlighting the careful consideration that went into animating each dragon to reflect its unique personality traits.
-
In one memorable scene, Silverwing is introduced in a dark cave, where her emergence had to be both gradual and ominous. “The way she’s moving forward is once again done in a super slow, heavy, highly controlled motion,” Pelletier explained. This deliberate pacing was essential to establishing Silverwing’s imposing presence and ensuring that the audience felt her full scale and power. The contrast between Silverwing’s controlled elegance and Moondancer’s aggressive energy was carefully crafted to highlight the differences in their characters, making each dragon distinct and memorable

In contrast, Silverwing’s manner, though terrifying, is also regal and composed, as highlighted in the intense scene where Ulf encounters the dragon in a dark cave.
-
A significant challenge for the team was capturing the massive scale of Silverwing, particularly during Ulf's initial encounter with the dragon deep within the Dragon Pit. The team used precise lighting and detailed animation to capture the dragon’s formidable presence, which was on display as it emergers from the darkness of the pit

Silverwing was the the biggest dragon we had to animate. The challenge for us was to animate that weight and size, especially in the sequence of the cave. We had to fit a pretty big dragon in a kind of small space, especially for the wings.
You're expecting Ulf to walk around and discover as we witness the size of this cave and then there's this first establishing shot where we need to feature how big the spaces yet we haven't seen the dragon.
Silverwing is menacing and you have to read her intentions shifting, like subtly as she's uh she's getting closer and closer to him. We wanted to find that sweet spot of her pushing him away and then accepting him as a possible rider and uh and him realizing that at the same time.
“I worked out quite quickly that Silverwing is one of the kinder dragons and, I believe, the most beautiful,” said Tom Bennett, who plays Ulf. His performance is different as a result: “It’s the first time you ever get to see someone flying a dragon laughing.”
“Our animators paid a lot of attention to Silverwing’s mouth, in the moment just after she nudges Ulf”, he says. “There’s a flash of danger and fear, where we don’t know if she’s going to accept him as her rider. Dragon’s mouths are strange because they’re not very fleshy - they’re between scales and contain a lot of teeth! At the same time, the most important word we had from the client to describe Silverwing was ‘royalty’, so she had to be regal and elegant. That’s a lot of ideas to balance in animation, and I think the team did a great job”.
-
Another important part of capturing the sense of realism was in ensuring that the dragons’ whole bodies responded to movement. “When Silverwing takes a giant step, for example, you have to ask yourself how that ripples through her muscles up to the neck and the head”, he says. “But you can’t over-do it. You need to find the balance between subtlety and immersion”.
-
Finally, a scene directly following that interaction between Ulf and Silverwing sees the dragonseed getting his first taste of flying across King’s Landing. “This is a moment where we can clearly see the influence of the fruit bat!”, notes Oscar. “When Silverwing moves its wings, that’s in the same motion as we originally designed based on our influences from the natural world”. -

It was Princess Rhaena, legend says, who put a dragon’s egg in Princess Alysanne’s cradle, just as she had for Prince Jaehaerys two years earlier. If those tales be true, from those eggs came the dragons Silverwing and Vermithor, whose names would be writ so large in the annals of the years to come.
- Fire and Blood "The Sons of the Dragon"
Like his father, Aenys Targaryen, the First of His Name, was given over to the flames in the yard at Dragonstone. His funeral was attended by his sons Viserys and Jaehaerys, twelve and seven years of age respectively, and his daughter Alysanne, five. His widow, Queen Alyssa, sang a dirge for him, and his own beloved Quicksilver set his pyre alight, though it was recorded that the dragons Vermithor and Silverwing added their own fire to hers.
- Fire and Blood "The Sons of the Dragon"
When at last Maegor returned to King’s Landing to seat himself again upon the Iron Throne, he was greeted with the news that his mother, Queen Visenya, had died. Moreover, in the confusion that followed the death of the Queen Dowager, Queen Alyssa and her children had made their escape from Dragonstone, with the dragons Vermithor and Silverwing…to where, no man could say. They had even gone so far as to steal Dark Sister as they fled.
- Fire and Blood The Sons of the Dragon"
Prince Jaehaerys was fourteen years old when he claimed the throne; a handsome youth, skilled with lance and longbow, and a gifted rider. More, he rode a great bronze-and-tan beast called Vermithor, and his sister Alysanne, a maid of twelve, commanded her own dragon, Silverwing. “Maegor has only one dragon,” Lord Rogar told the stormlords. “Our prince has two.”
- Fire and Blood "The Sons of the Dragon"
King Jaehaerys and Princess Alysanne were the last to appear, descending from a bright sky on their dragons, Vermithor and Silverwing (the Dragonpit still lacked the great dome that would be its crowning glory, it must be recalled), their great leathern wings stirring up clouds of sand as they came down side by side, to the awe and terror of the gathered multitudes. (The oft-told tale that the arrival of the dragons caused the aged High Septon to soil his robes is likely only a calumny.)
- Fire and Blood "The Year of the Three Brides-49 AC"
That night, under cover of darkness, King Jaehaerys and Princess Alysanne mounted their dragons, Vermithor and Silverwing, and departed the Red Keep for the ancient Targaryen citadel below the Dragonmont. Reportedly the first words the young king spoke upon landing were, “I have need of a septon.
- Fire and Blood "The Year of the Three Brides-49 AC"
During the course of his long reign, Jaehaerys would spend more days and nights guesting with one lord or another, or holding audience in some market town or village, than at Dragonstone and the Red Keep combined. And oft as not, Alysanne was with him, her silvery dragon soaring beside his great beast of burnished bronze.
- Fire and Blood "Birth, Death, and Betrayal Under King Jaehaerys I"
Princess Aerea had known Vermithor and Silverwing during her time at court, but she had never been allowed too close to them. Here she could visit with the dragons as often as she liked; the hatchlings, the young drakes, her mother’s Dreamfyre…and greatest of them all, Balerion and Vhagar, huge and ancient and sleepy, but still terrifying when they woke and stirred and spread their wings.
- Fire and Blood "Birth, Death, and Betrayal Under King Jaehaerys I"
The unexpected arrival of Vermithor and Silverwing at Oldtown brought thousands to the streets to point and stare. No word of their coming had been sent ahead, and there were many in the city who were frightened, wondering what this might portend…none, mayhaps, more than Septon Mattheus, who turned pale when he was told. Jaehaerys brought down Vermithor on the wide marble plaza outside the Starry Sept, but it was his queen who made the city gasp when Silverwing alighted atop the Hightower itself, the beating of her wings fanning the flames of its famous beacon.
- Fire and Blood "Birth, Death, and Betrayal Under King Jaehaerys I"
When Alysanne tried to share stories of her own girlhood, and told of how Rhaena had put a dragon’s egg into her cradle and cuddled and cared for her “as if she were my mother,” Aerea said, “She never gave me an egg, she just gave me away and flew off to Fair Isle.”
- Fire and Blood "Birth, Death, and Betrayal Under King Jaehaerys I"
All such preparations were thrown into disarray by the sudden and unexpected arrival of Rhaena Targaryen from Dragonstone. “It may well be that dragons somehow sense, and echo, the moods of their riders,” Septon Barth wrote, “for Dreamfyre came down out of the clouds like a raging storm that day, and Vermithor and Silverwing rose up and roared at her coming, suchwise that all of us who saw and heard were fearful that the dragons were about to fly at one another with flame and claw, and tear each other apart as Balerion once did to Quicksilver by the Gods Eye.”
- Fire and Blood "Birth, Death, and Betrayal Under King Jaehaerys I"
Three younger dragons soon joined the Black Dread under the Hill of Rhaenys, whilst Vermithor and Silverwing remained at the Red Keep, close to their riders.
- Fire and Blood "Jaehaerys and Alysanne: Their Triumphs and Tragedies"
Queen Alysanne’s travels began in the city of White Harbor, where tens of thousands of northerners turned out to cheer her and gape at Silverwing with awe, and a bit of terror. It was the first time any of them had seen a dragon. The size of the crowds surprised even their lord.
- Fire and Blood "Jaehaerys and Alysanne: Their Triumphs and Tragedies"
After taking leave of White Harbor, the queen’s retinue sailed up the White Knife to its rapids, then proceeded overland to Winterfell, whilst Alysanne herself flew ahead on Silverwing. The warmth of her reception at White Harbor was not to be duplicated at the ancient seat of the Kings in the North, where Alaric Stark and his sons alone emerged to greet her when her dragon landed before his castle gates.
- Fire and Blood "Jaehaerys and Alysanne: Their Triumphs and Tragedies"
Once the initial frost had thawed, his lordship took the queen hunting after elk and wild boar in the wolfswood, showed her the bones of a giant, and allowed her to rummage as she pleased through his modest castle library. He even deigned to approach Silverwing, though warily.
- Fire and Blood "Jaehaerys and Alysanne: Their Triumphs and Tragedies"
Though it was summer and the Wall was weeping, the chill of the ice could still be felt whenever the wind blew, and every gust would make the dragon hiss and snap. “Thrice I flew Silverwing high above Castle Black, and thrice I tried to take her north beyond the Wall,” Alysanne wrote to Jaehaerys, “but every time she veered back south again and refused to go. Never before has she refused to take me where I wished to go. I laughed about it when I came down again, so the black brothers would not realize anything was amiss, but it troubled me then and it troubles me still.”
- Fire and Blood "Jaehaerys and Alysanne: Their Triumphs and Tragedies"
Her mother had been fearless; Daella always seemed to be afraid. She had a kitten that she loved until he scratched her; then she would not go near a cat. The dragons terrified her, even Silverwing.
- Fire and Blood "The Long Reign - Jaehaerys and Alysanne: Policy, Progeny, and Pain"
Queen Alysanne was frightened too, once she read those words. She mounted Silverwing within days and flew swiftly to the Vale, alighting first in Gulltown before proceeding on to the Gates of the Moon, and then skyward to the Eyrie.
- Fire and Blood "The Long Reign - Jaehaerys and Alysanne: Policy, Progeny, and Pain"
And oh, how she had loved to fly. Silverwing had carried her to Oldtown, to the Wall, and to a thousand places in between, and Alysanne saw them all as few others ever would, looking down from above the clouds.
- Fire and Blood "The Long Reign - Jaehaerys and Alysanne: Policy, Progeny, and Pain"
She was far too unsteady to fly. Silverwing last carried her into the sky in 93 AC. When she came to earth again and climbed painfully from her dragon’s back, the queen wept.
- Fire and Blood "The Long Reign - Jaehaerys and Alysanne: Policy, Progeny, and Pain"
“A cock is not essential. If Your Grace truly believes that women lack the wit to rule, plainly you have no further need of me.” And thus Queen Alysanne departed King’s Landing and flew to Dragonstone on her dragon Silverwing. She and King Jaehaerys remained apart for two years, the period of estrangement recorded in the histories as the Second Quarrel.
- Fire and Blood "Heirs of the Dragon: A Question of Succession"
Moreover, six other dragons made their lairs in the smoky caverns of the Dragonmont above the castle. There was Silverwing, Good Queen Alysanne’s mount of old; Seasmoke, the pale grey beast that had been the pride and passion of Ser Laenor Velaryon; hoary old Vermithor, unridden since the death of King Jaehaerys.
- Fire and Blood "The Dying of the Dragons: The Blacks and the Greens"
The most unlikely of these would-be dragonriders was Mushroom himself, whose Testimony speaks at length of his attempt to mount old Silverwing, judged to be the most docile of the masterless dragons.
- Fire and Blood "The Dying of the Dragons: The Red Dragon and the Gold"
Yet Seasmoke, Vermithor, and Silverwing were accustomed to men and tolerant of their presence. Having once been ridden, they were more accepting of new riders. Vermithor, the Old King’s own dragon, bent his neck to a blacksmith’s bastard, a towering man called Hugh the Hammer or Hard Hugh, whilst a pale-haired man-at-arms named Ulf the White (for his hair) or Ulf the Sot (for his drinking) mounted Silverwing, beloved of Good Queen Alysanne.
