Education

A variety of documents relating to the Djament boys education years. Thanks to Vivien Lapa for directing me to some of this information. If you want to see what else is in the year book, go to the "Pedagogical Digital Library of Krakow and click on publication 421. Now if you're brave (and can read Polish) you can scroll through all the pages (and there are many).

The Schools

The current school crest.

Picture of the King Jan Sobieski high school (gymnasium) - Julek graduated from there in 1929.
Some further notes courtesy of Wikipedia :The Adam Mickiewicz school was renamed several times. It is now known as the VI Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Adama Mickiewicza (The Adam Mickiewicz High School). It is one of the oldest high schools in Krakow. It was opened in 1902 and named Państwowego Gimnazjum św. Jacka. (Saint Jack's public school) and in 1919 it became VII Państwowe Gimnazjum Realne (Public Junior High School). Six years later the Adam Mickiewicz name was added. In 1937 it became VII Państwowe Liceum i Gimnazjum im. Adama Mickiewicza w Krakowie (public school with 4 years of junior high school and 2 year of high school) specialising in humanities. For 30 years it was located in Starowislna Street (same street as the Djaments lived). After several name changes it eventually became in 1967 VI Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. A. Mickiewicza. It also changed it's location many times, until eventually in 1992 it settled in ul. Wąską 7.
  • Adam Mickiewicz was a famous Polish poet
Janek and Stefan's school as it was in the 1930s. This picture was sent as a postcard to Stefan on the occasion of the student reunion in 1957. On the right is a message written on the back which translates as
Reunion, January 26, 1957We send greetings to our dear colleague Stefan DrobotThen follow 8 signatures, beginning with St. Bartel, Jan Maciejko etc. Most of these appear in the class list below.

School Year 1930 class VII for Janek and Stefan

Cover Page from the 1929-30 year book
Djaments are listed here in class VII (p69)
Their close friend, Wladyslaw Zbik is also listed here in the same class (p70)
This page, also from the year book, shows the ages of students in class VII. Interestingly there is a very wide spread of ages, ranging from 16 to 22. Jakub and Samuel would have been 17. (p75)
Underneath is table showing where the students lived. Not surprisingly nearly all lived with their parents. (p75)
And here we have a table which shows the parents occupation. Most we re in commerce, either as buyers or general traders. (p74)
Here we have a table showing students' religion. Out of a total of 330, 123 were Jewish ("mojzerz") with a great majority of Roman Catholic students. One in each of the 3rd and 5th class was Orthodox (I presume Greek Orthodox).

The last marking shows that Jakub Djament studied “Antonjusz i Kleopatra" by Szekspir (Shakespeare).
This describes the presentations and extra activities by the students as part of their graduation class of 1931.
  • The top marking indicates that Samuel Djament was a member of the Literary Circle as well as being the president.
  • The next marking shows that Jakub Djament presented a paper on two books written by Julius Slowacki - "Father Marek" and "Salome's Silver Dream".
  • The third marking shows that Samuel Djament presented a paper of another book written by Julius Slowacki "Hellinism" (study of ancient Greek culture).
