Create a compost pit or pile at school if there is enough room and your school has a garden. This is a great activity for classes to have hands-on experience in learning how to compost. It can also be done by an environmental club at school. Since a compost pile is left alone for the most part, it is not labor-intensive once you begin the initial process of developing the program.
Separate the materials (trash cans with different labeled slots are a great option) - to avoid pests and foul smells, make sure to separate meat, grease, or dairy products
Choose a site to be your compost spot, preferably a dry, shady area
Get some supplies ready, such as shovels, a base layer of twigs, mulch to provide drainage, etc. Make sure to research what the school has and see if things you need can be donated.
