Participate in the city collection program if your school does not have space or resources to compost. Separate waste and put food waste in a specified bin. The City of Los Angeles can pick it up and take it to a center where it will be turned into compost.
What Can Be Composted
According to the Los Angeles Sanitation Website, you can compost:
Fruits and vegetables
Dairy and eggshells
Bread, cereal, grains, rice, pasta, and beans
Meat, bone, fish, and shells
Coffee grounds and filters
Food soiled paper products including greasy napkins and pizza boxes
Yard waste, flowers, grass clippings, and tree trimmings
Clean untreated wood
Natural wood chopsticks (clean, untreated, and not lacquered)
100% natural bamboo (clean, untreated, and not coated)
Natural corks (consider a web search for "cork recycling" for drop-off locations
You cannot compost:
Plastics
Other products not listed above that are labeled "biodegradable" or "compostable”, as these products do not break down fast enough for commercial facilities to compost them. However, you can compost them if you create your own compost pile
Glass
Produce stickers
Rubber bands
Twisty ties
Plastics, waxes, coatings, etc.
Pet waste
Pet litter
Fats, oil & grease derived from cooking
Cacti and thorny succulents
