'Hedge' is the name given to my House Spirit that lives in my attic. He is a masculine/NB spirit that seems introverted but curious.
Hedge's name originally came from the phrase 'To hedge your bets', which I linked to 'Being on the fence', basically being in a transitional space - which to me took reference from the fact he seems to mostly enjoy the liminal spaces in my attic (Doorways, cubbyholes, and nooks in the attic are his favourites).
When going into deeper research, the word comes from Old English hecg, meaning any fence 'living or artificial'. I believe Hedge's energy as a House Spirit to be that of a protective energy that helps ward the place (especially once I started burning candles for Hedge, & letting them pull energy from workings and such), as well as this quote from 'Online Etymology Dictionary';
'Figurative sense of "boundary, barrier" is from mid-14c. As hedges were "often used by vagabonds as places of shelter or resort" [Century Dictionary], the word, compounded, "notes something mean, vile, of the lowest class" [Johnson], from contemptuous attributive sense of "plying one's trade under a hedge" (hedge-priest, hedge-lawyer, hedge-wench, etc.), a usage attested from 1530s. The noun in the betting sense is from 1736'
I relate this quote to Hedge being that his 'home' is a place of safety. Nothing too bad can happen in his space, and I feel he protects the place from lesser general threats.
Early notes on Hedge go as follows:
My House Spirit is very strongly masculine, with a penchant for books, and is very curious and flighty.
He likes calm, energetic environments, however doesn't mind a bit of metal/rock music either (Sat on a beanbag in the attic the other day, reading a book and listening to music, and he just vibed with me).
He lives in the attic, in the crawlspace and alcove that I have claimed as part of my workspace (My partner has the other half of the attic).
He is skittish, but friendly, & often helps me by reminding me of books sometimes. He has also finally shown himself to my other witch friend, though was promptly scared off momentarily as she got very excited.
As I have Psychic 'Hearing', I can often hear him muttering to himself, and sometimes can ACTUALLY hear him moving around in the crawlspace. While building my second desk, I could 'hear' him asking 'What're you doing?', so I chatted to him for a little while. He made fun of me when I had to repeatedly undo the desk because I built it wrong.
I haven't given him a name, nor has he offered one. He started off as 'Bookshelf Guy', as I initially believed his space was only at the end of the alcove, behind the bookshelf, however, I have investigated further, and he moves around my entire half of the attic, investigating and asking 'What're you doing', a lot.
All in all, he's a pretty chill entity. I also find he likes a good bout of music, and 'pops' his head through the crawlspace door to listen when I or a friend play guitar.
