75% of the high-performing leaders have personally experienced imposter syndrome at least once in their career.
Imposter syndrome is the persistent inability to believe that your success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of your own efforts or skills.
It is a condition of feeling anxious and not experiencing success internally, despite seeing objective external evidence of high-performance. This condition often results in people feeling like "a fraud" or "a phony" and doubting their abilities.
57% of them most often experienced imposter syndrome at times when they were promoted or making transitions to new roles.
Leaders experiencing imposter syndrome associate with its 4 Ps which cause them to doubt themselves and disturb their personal-professional alignment.
Procrastination: On one hand, they are unable to start a task because they are too overwhelmed by the new and most probably increased responsibilities.
Perfectionism: On another hand, they are unable to stop working on a task because they are doubting their skills and performance.
Paralysis: They feel paralyzed by their own thoughts. This leads to inaction which thereby decreases their effectiveness as a leader.
People pleasing: They do not feel like they deserve to be in a decision-making position. Hence, they typically say what they believe others want to hear.
In trying to prove that they belong, they work so hard to be someone they are not. If you ask me, this causes misalignment in your personal-professional life. They are increasing the switching cost between their personal and professional life.
They almost dread meetings, performance reviews, and face-time of any kind because they are worried that someone will call them out on their lie.
So let me reframe the question:
If inauthenticity is the problem, what is the solution? - It is Authentic Leadership.
Authentic leadership is a type of management style in which people act in a real, genuine and sincere way that is true to who they are as individuals.
