For many people salt comes in a handful of forms. Iodized table salt ( white very fine crystals) is in nearly every kitchen while Coarse Kosher Salt ( white larger crystals) , Sea Salt ( white with varied textures) and Himalayan Pink Salts ( pink variety of textures ) are also well known if less commonly used. But where does it come from?
All Salt Comes from the Sea
"All major rock salt deposits originated from the evaporation of seawater at some time during the geologic past. " or at least that is the prevaling theory among scientists.
Salt crystals form as the water evaporates from around it. If the evaporation occurs over a long period of time large crystals form. This type of slow evaporation caused the halite or rock salt that is mined in mountains all over the world. Water bubbling across such deposits before they surface can cause salt brine springs, and of course the ocean is still vast source of much of the earths salt.
