The vattenkanin (Swedish for water rabbit) is a large member of the cottontail rabbit genus found on the Mossfell Archipelago. Unlike its more terrestrial cousins, the vattenkanin is much more suited for aquatic life, giving it the nickname the North American Capybara. Vattenkanin are a common sight in the many mangroves, seagrass meadows, and brackish marshes of the archipelago. Using a sleek body and webbed toes, vattenkanin can easily swim in the water to reach their primary food of aquatic plants and seagrasses. Vattenkanin also can grow to tremendous sizes for a rabbit, with adults sometimes reaching 3 feet at the shoulder. This is largely attributed to the lack of substantial herbivorous competition found in the archipelago, aside from the occasional manatee.
Because of it's ubiquitous nature, it is a common source of food for many of the islands predators - including humans. Roasted vattenkanin is considered a prime example of pre-colonial Viardrmen cuisine and many remaining Viardrmen on the islands celebrate weddings and birthdays with a tasty roasted 'vannin'.
