The Mossfell Islands are a volcanic archipelago in the Northern Atlantic Ocean, roughly 250 miles southeast from Nantucket and 240 miles south from Nova Scotia. The islands are the result of an oceanic hotspot underneath the North American Plate and are located on the edge of the continental shelf. Like other notable island chains on Earth such as the Hawaiian Island chain, the Galapagos, and the Azores, the Mossfell islands were created through the action of shield volcanos. They are mainly composed of upwellings of oceanic island basalt.
