un/in/tended greenery

Susanne Niemann

Photographs, 2023

un/in/tended greenery is a photographic exploration of materializations of the color green in urban spaces. At a closer look, the cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai are full of flourishing gardens—informal vegetable beds, ‘weeds’ covering empty lots, and neighborhood gardens. Some are unplanned or unclaimed while others are well tended to and meticulously integrated into the city by urban planners and residents.

about the artist

Susanne Niemann’s practice lies at the intersection of new media art and anthropological scholarship. She conducts creative research and designs experiences around themes of human connection, nature in urban context and digital archives of our activity in actual and virtual space. She is currently based in the UAE, pursuing a BA in Interactive Media, Anthropology and Design at New York University Abu Dhabi and mapping public spaces in Abu Dhabi as part of the Anthropocene Research Group. Previously, she conducted visual ethnographic research in collaboration with the University of the Arts Berlin and local community gardens exploring mediations of activism through ethnographic filmmaking. Prior to that, she worked with an environmental justice collective in the United States and an NGO in Berlin to translate environmental research into educational visuals and community events. Her work is guided by an anthropological mindset and methods of documentation and archiving, revolving around notions of community, space and the environment.
