We met on Iona in the winter of 2012. We were pilgrims coming to the island for retreat and renewal on what the Abbey calls a 'Quiet Week'. We had a shared love of music and were thrown together from day 1 as the Abbey musicians were away that week and music was needed for the services. We volunteered with some hesitation for the music team which ended up being us and one of the islands volunteers...
Turns out learning new music for a daily church service schedule is a fruitful seedbed for a good future relationship. We parted friends at the end of the week, kept in touch and within a year had become a couple.
This is the first ever picture of us, on Iona. We had only met a few days previously. It's easy to see we were comfortable together!
At this stage Bridget had considerable experience as a solo performer , songwriter and choir leader. Phil, an excellent guitarist and singer, played regularly in church but had not otherwise performed in public since his school days.
We soon established a routine of playing together at local folk clubs and by 2018 Bridget had persuaded Phil to join her in concert . By 2019 we were performing regularly as The Blow-ins. Local folk impresario Tony Haynes encouraged us to get out and take our music to different venues, which gave us a lot of confidence. Here we are at our first post-Covid concert - an outdoor affair in summer 2021 which brought both us and the audience to tears. We were so happy to be playing live again...
The music continues and we enjoy it more and more. Phil is now much more involved in writing the songs and the music and we've learnt to really value and enjoy each other's different skills and styles.
And here's the happiest part of the story so far... we got married in 2024. Later that same year we recorded our first studio album "All AlongThe Sand". We have a growing, supportive audience around the country. Who knows where we will 'Blow In' next?
