Changes to TFU Handbook - SEPTEMBER 2025 - RTFO and Policy Updates
This policy will outline the expectations, regulations, and selection process for the Tactical Firearms Incident Commander certification.
2.1 All clauses within section 2 of the TFU Recruitment Policy are applicable during the TFIC selection process.
2.2 Tactical Firearms Incident Commander (TFIC) follows a selection process whereby candidates must meet strict criteria to progress through the selection process. These criteria are outlined in section 3 and on the careers page on PLPD.online.
2.3 When a candidate is granted the TFIC Certification, an official document of the voting process must be stored for a minimum of 90 days.
2.4 Tactical Firearms Unit Command, including the Head of Tactical Firearms, may not disregard Standard Eligibility Requirements or Selection Criteria by any means to grant this certification to any officer.
2.5 TFU Command must come to a majority decision to grant a Tactical Firearms Officer the TFIC Certification.
2.6 Certain ranks, such as Tactical Firearms Command ranks and the department's Senior Management team ranks, hold the TFIC Certification by default.
3.1 To attain the certification, one must show these qualities over their peers:
Flawless Leadership skills.
Perfect conduct whilst on duty.
Expert knowledge of Tactical Firearms tactics and the ability to perform them to an exceptional standard.
Mastery of the Core Principles of TFU.
Exceptional ability to communicate effectively during high-stress firearms situations.
Ability to consistently resolve situations.
Incredible teamwork skills.
4.1 During TFU Deployments, TFIC’s hold the chain of Command and equivalent authority to a Lieutenant when in gear on a Firearms incident. The certification does not authorise TFICs to perform supervisory responsibilities beyond giving orders in volatile situations.
4.2 TFICs should, when possible, pre-plan all raids, search warrants, and firearms operations using the meeting room, issuing clear commands, tactics, and strategies.
