Virtual Private Network

A VPN allows members of teppe to connect via LAN, allowing us to play some games that may have issues when connecting via online servers.

Some games require LAN* which in short is looking at your home network and scanning for people on your house network. This isn't practical when friends play online so we can trick the network into thinking your online friends are on your Local Area Network* by using software called a VPN.

We have used multiple VPNs in the past to ensure a stable connection:

Tunngle - [REMOVED] Closed 30/04/2018 due to new European General Data Protection Regulation.
Evolve - [REMOVED] Shutdown 11/11/2018. Their community now lives at Player.me
Hamachi - https://www.vpn.net/

Update: We typically used to use Tunngle but it appears that had closed down and a similar fate has occurred to others. We are always looking for better solutions for other teppe members.

Typical problems with connecting to players using VPN are the following:

Your Ports are blocked or not Forwarded.

Your IP address points to the location of your machine on the internet, however this may not be enough to find exact spot (just like a postman getting lost on a long street), each program connecting to the internet will have its own port.

Check your Firewall, check the application isn't blocked (its typically not unless you do so)
Check Anti-Virus programs; sometimes they block connections (consult others for advice).
Port Forward by going into your router settings and adding the port (UDP typically).

Restart is required after installing a VPN; it needs to add a network driver (Tunneling Adapter).

UPnP is not enabled - this lets a program attempt to sort out the port issue itself.
