2021 Latin America, Brazil

Programme Recap

Our engagement with Brazil enlightened our tauira to our Indigenous cousins from the various tribes living both within the Amazon and in urban settings that are paving new ways to support their own whānau, tribes and communities. Seeing how Indigenous culture, narratives and environment is paramount and carefully utilised to create new enterprises and tourism operations was inspiring. It was beautiful to connect as Indigenous to Indigenous to wānanga over our shared global challenges and how we can work together to see our cultures not only being recognised, but thriving in all spaces.

A highlight was definitely being able to speak with Chief Mapu as he shared his own karakia and stories from his people. It was clear to see how intrinsic the environment and nature is to everyday life. Like Māori, the Indigenous tribes are the protectors of the land and water and remain as strong voices to maintain their own kaitiakitanga. To be able to share relate other Indigenous students from the University of Roraima and see the rangatahi making moves in both urban and rural settings was evident that the next generation is in great hands.

2021 Latin America cohort student Daniel McWatters shares "I enjoyed the insights into the Indigenous Brazilian culture as well as struggles they go through to see that they have rights. This was both enlightening and fascinating”.

We are especially thankful for everyone that helped make Latin America Cape a success!

About: ‘Vestigia Nulla Retrorsum’ is a Latin saying which translates to ‘never a footstep back’ this motto provided great motivation for myself during my high school years and still to this day. About: I’m a pretty simple Māori girl, I love my kai, music and whānau time. This has grounded me as a person and influences me to make meaningful decisions and put aroha into the work I do.
