2021 FAQs

Will Te Hononga-ā-Kiwa be delivered completely online?

We do not have an extensive yes or no answer. We are however following guidelines from our NZ Ministry Of Health Guidelines as well as international travelling guidelines. Te Hononga-ā-Kiwa will adapt to make our participants experience engaging and connecting as possible. Scenarios can mean that our programme may not be not be delivered completely in person - tauira & pākihi Māori will still connect with indigenous whānau that come from many walks of life including but not exclusive to the following; entrepreneurs, academics, government officials in addition to like-minded tauira & pākihi Māori.

2020 FAQ's

I'm not a business student, can I still apply?

Absolutely! We encourage Māori tertiary students across other disciplines to apply where they can demonstrate their experience and how the Programme will be beneficial to their development and business aspirations. Including your business experience or personal goals in relation to Māori development in this space will be helpful.

Does the 2020 delivery of Te Hononga-ā-Kiwa travel internationally?

No. Due to the global pandemic, the Programme will be delivered online. You will still have the opportunity to connect with businesses and government agencies based in the focus country and get insight into the culture and doing business in those countries.

The 2020 programme has a greater emphasis on developing innovative ideas through the Group Business Project which includes some awesome prizes up for grabs!

I am still in my first or second year of study, will I still be considered?

Preference is given to students in their final year or higher, namely given the design and experience required to fulfill on aspects of the Programme. If you can put a strong case forward in your submission as to what experience you bring then we would encourage you to apply!

I don't know which region to apply for...

Each Programme has its own focus area and cultural exchange. If you read through the 2020 Programmes page you can find more information and decide which tour is the best fit for you!

Can I apply for more than one region?

If you are interested in applying for more than one region, you must submit a separate application with supporting documentation for each. Your application will only be considered for the specific region in which you have applied.

What if I can't make some of the Programme?

You need to be available for ALL dates associated with the Programme to participate. When looking at which region you would like to apply for please consider your availability for the duration of the Programme. Failure to attend all dates may result in the forfeiture of your place on the Programme.

Are you monitoring Coronavirus (COVID-19) and its impact on your Programmes?

Yes we are! Our 2020 Programme has been redesigned to be delivered online due to the current travel restrictions globally.

The Te Hononga-ā-Kiwa Programme Team is closely monitoring the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19). The safety and wellbeing of our participants and staff remains our top priority and we will follow Ministry of Health guidance and any travel restrictions put in place by the NZ Government and our host universities. As a result, the three programmes (scheduled for August, September and November 2020) are subject to change in the event of changes to health warnings or travel restrictions.

2019 FAQ's

I have no experience travelling overseas, will I be okay?*

Our programmes are designed with a heavy emphasis on participant well-being and safety. The Programme Leader has measures in place for a number of situations that may arise and the team is highly trained to ensure every effort has been made for participants safety and comfort during the programme.

Orientation is a specific aspect of the Programme that has been purposefully designed to ensure that all participants are equipped with all they need for the International Visit.

Throughout the years students and businesses alike have highlighted the manaakitanga and whakawhanaungatanga values that are felt throughout the programme which has eased concerns of being in a whole new country with new people.

How much money do I need?*

You will be required to cover costs for some of your meals to approximately $250NZD and domestic transfers in New Zealand (to the airport and back home on return). If you are a Business participant in addition to this you will also need to host up to three university students for a pre-departure workshop at the businesses expense.

The Programme itinerary is packed to ensure you get the most out of your time in-country, however there is scheduled time in the itinerary that allow for personal exploration around the city and enjoy local sites and attractions at your own cost.

All International flights, accommodation, in-country transport, some meals, visas (if required) and travel insurance associated costs are covered by the Programme.
