Addressing the changing landscape in communities and addressing the needs that present for those who are in the great transition of adolescence and adulting. Reframing how we view youth with competent and accurate perspectives. With an informed respect for youth, we can provide the sanctuary of community space that offers acceptance, understanding, and opportunities to serve as solutions to larger community problems.
Philip Scolaro believes that libraries stand as one of the last surviving islands of community safety and creative opportunity. For more than seven years, he has worked closely with “opportunity youth” in Maryland and has listened closely to their frustrations and their dreams. Now, as a respected expert in youth engagement, with nationally recognized training and collaboration experience, he works with youth to channel their frustrations into positive change as they identify and strive toward their own goals. In his position with Potomac Case Management Services, Philip has been tasked with developing and managing client-led programs for some of the most vulnerable populations in his community.
In addition to his professional work, Philip creates original art and restores historical works with traditional bookbinding skills he learned in an apprenticeship in Canada. Philip has taught the craft in several community classes as well as one hosted by his local free library. He and his artsy, homesteading family view the library as a bottomless source of inspiration and exposure as well as a community sanctuary.
Philip lives and works in Washington County, Maryland.
