Take Flight

Climb aboard the wondrous Boeing Flying Machines and take flight into a worldwide adventure encountering enchanting vistas, exhilarating thrills and an eclectic groups of cultures that make for an exotic getaway in the skies! Take Flight acts as a spiritual successor to If You Had Wings at Magic Kingdom which closed in 1981 to be replaced by an attraction based on the in-development movie Tron.

Queue

Guests approach Take Flight within the World Above pavilion while taking note of the attraction's marquee. Jutting out of the wall of the queue is a plane turbine equipped with a slowly-spinning propeller. On one blade the word 'Take' is present and on the other 'Flight' announcing the presence of the ride to all. Wings attached below the turbine contain a sign that displays the current wait time for the attraction.

Upon passing under the marquee guests are led through a series of switchbacks in a well-lit queue area. The walls have slight cloud designs with quotes about flying from various aerospace engineers, pilots, and even the CEO of Boeing. The queue mirrors the queue for Living with the Land in that it remains rather plain but able to hold a large amount of people that continuously flow into the ride vehicles.

Ride System

This is an aerial dark ride taking a page from Peter Pan's Flight while expanding the ride vehicles to allow for more capacity in a vehicle. There are rows with each row being able to fit a party of four. Each row will have two lap bars for two people in a row. The ride vehicle is designed after early flying machines, and even includes a propeller in the front of the vehicles that spins throughout the ride. The dark ride will be able to reach max speeds of 5 mph, but it will feel like a lot more thanks to wind machines causing guests to feel like they're going faster.

Ride Experience

"Hey there all you flying aces it's your resident chief pilot here! Now when you board your Boeing Flying Machines make sure to keep your hands, arms, feet and legs inside the vehicle at all times! Hold onto any loose cargo, and if you have any bags you can place them underneath your seats! Stay safe when you take flight!"

As guests reach the loading area they are guided into what row they are to be seated in by a cast member dressed in a flight attendants outfit. Once all guests are seated the lap bars go down to secure guests, and the flying machines begin to move out of the station. The cast members check to make sure the lap bars are secure before the flying machine takes flight to the world above. When the guests are all secured the cast members wish all guests a safe flight!

Scene 1: Lift Off

As the flying machine departs from load it turns into a rather dark room illuminated very slightly be runway lights in the ground. The walls of the room are painted to depicts a dark night at an airfield. The sound of radio static as an old elderly posh voice comes over the speakers.

"Hello? This is tower to Boeing, you're clear for takeoff! Now go and take flight!"

The vehicle quickly turns and begins to ascend as wind machines blow wind towards guests creating the sensation of going faster than guests are actually travelling at. A plywood cutout of an airport tower comes into view, and it seems like the flying machine is about to crash into the tower.

"Tower to Boeing. Go up, up I say! You're going to crash!"

The flying machine goes up a little bit more as the top of the tower folds down allowing the machine to safely go over it while giving riders the sensation of a near crash experience. An orchestral rendition of the attraction's main theme begins to play with a loud crescendo transitioning into a lighter rendition as guests fly over a miniature model of Walt Disney World at night.

"Tower to Boeing. You've taken flight! Now go and journey to new places!"

With those final words guests are off on their flight around the world to countless destinations that were tourism hotspots in the 1970's and 80's.

Scene 2: India

As the flying machine enters India the theme for Take Flight is played on the sitar adding to the ambience of the India scene. The scene begins as guests fly over Jaipur, the pink city. The flying machine makes a turn as guests accidentally fly through one of the arches found at Red Fort. The flying machine exits the mountain chain and fly over Nazca where the famous Nazca Lines dwell. Various figures are drawn onto the ground below, but one of them seems to be alive as it moves and twitches like an animal! This is achieved by the use of a projector. The fields become rockier and mountainous transforming into the next the next scene of the ride.

Scene 5: Greece

As the flying machine enters Greece the theme for Take Flight is played on the bouzouki adding to the ambience of the Greek scene. The flying machine dodges the ruin cliffs of the Acropolis at Athens. The flying machine turns allowing for guests to take in the Acropolis including the famous Parthenon. "Tower to Boeing! You've seen so many places, but have yet to see them all! Take flight onto new journeys worldwide on a Boeing!"
