Meet Shelly, a friendly and energetic turtle. Shelly proudly represents the Niagara region.

• Why the turtle? There are many wonderful coincidences that explain why the turtle is the perfect fit for the 2022 Canada Games in Niagara.

  • Consider the following connections:

1. TURTLE ISLAND The turtle has been an important animal and traditional symbol of creation for many First Nations people who believe their lands in North and Central America were formed on the back of a turtle. Some even call the Niagara Escarpment the backbone, or heart, of what is known as “Turtle Island”.

2. The turtle's 13 large sections on it's shell (12 municipalities, plus one region in Niagara = 13).

3. the 28 small section on the turtle's shell and this is the 28th Canada Games!
