Shibuya Gear is Future City’s premiere shop for aspiring street artists, with apparel and accessories straight from Tokyo-to. Inspired by the cult classic Jet Set Radio and its beloved sequel, Shibuya Gear is a small shop nestled into the border between the City Center and Industrial District. This shows in the storefront itself, a grungy building with billowing exhaust pipes and an eye-catching neon sign. Outside, Beat will occasionally skate past, doing tricks and greeting young guests.

Inside, the store is split up into two rooms. At the cash registers, employees wearing some prime 90s fashion will gossip about the happenings in Future City while using some radical slang that’s about two decades too late. This part of the store offers clothing based on late 90s Japanese youth fashion from oversized goggles to chain necklaces to retro crop tops. Much of the clothing features designs from real graffiti artists like Eric Haze. Guests can also purchase roller skates here, based on those found in the games.

The back room is a little stranger, a little edgier, and a little more offbeat. The offerings here include boomboxes, silly string styled as spray paint, and stickers and temporary tattoos based on the game’s graffiti. Perhaps the biggest attraction is DJ Professor K, a lovingly built animatronic character who sits behind at a pair of turntables. While he’s usually hidden behind curtains, he’ll occasionally be revealed to shoppers. When he’s not giving the news on Future City or bumping the series’ soundtrack, he’ll interact with guests, complimenting their style or attitude.
