3. APOGEE Innovation Challenge: APOGEE 2018

Apogee Innovation Challenge is an event conducted during Apogee, International Technical Festival of BITS Pilani. It's a kernel event of the fest where we are inviting companies of various disciplines to pose a design challenge pertaining to their interest. It provides the students of the country a stage to showcase their skills, talent and technical expertise. The Apogee Innovation Challenge is one of its kind event that allows companies to get innovative solutions to real life challenges faced by the company from students.

Teams of students, across the country, get around 1-1.5 months to solve this challenge and submit the solutions to the companies of their desired preference. The companies will decide the best 5 solutions pertaining to their requirements and those teams get a chance to present their idea in front of the company representatives during Apogee. The winners are awarded a cash prize, a summer/winter internship at their company or any goodies that the company may seem fit to felicitate them with.

Rolls-Royce is a global company providing highly-efficient integrated power and propulsion solutions. Their power systems are predominantly used in aerospace, marine, energy and off-highway applications.

Team Garuda proposed a preliminary design of a hybrid powered airliner, having passenger capacity of more than 100 which use existing gas turbine engine to generate electricity, which will be used to power the electric motors.

The design was be graded based on following parameters:

1. Use of system engineering approach in design phase: The design should include aircraft system architecture (placement of passengers, fuel and cargo), power system architecture (gas turbine, generator and electric motors)and engine-airframe integration.

2. Preliminary aircraft design calculations.

3. Case study for the aircraft size and improvement predictions.

Team Garuda bagged Runner-Up position in this challenge witnessing 50+ entries
