The entire land is a coordinated tapestry of kinetic energy and movement, and almost all of this vitality is connected to water in some way, whether it be through steam shooting across the walkways over guests’ heads or a fountain adding some life to the middle of the town.
However, perhaps the most noticeable use of water in the land is the multitude of fountain jets found in the land’s main lagoon. Though similar to the World of Color fountain area found in the lagoon at neighboring Disney California Adventure, this fountain array is much smaller in scale and features more advanced mechanics, including multiple rings of jets that spin on a "turntable" under the water. Additionally, almost every fountain head has the ability to rotate and adjust its flow to a mist or jet.
These mechanics are put to use throughout the day, as a small selection of jets run continuously to entrance guests. Additionally, every ten minutes, a larger selection of fountains come on, including both of the rotating rings.
However, the biggest use of the fountains comes at night, when a brand new show unlike anything else at the resort is presented - Spirits of the Depths. This nighttime spectacle combines water-based lights and imagery with projection mapping and effects across the entire land to deliver an entirely immersive experience.
The show’s storyline centers around the mystical Leviathan alluded to throughout the land. This creature, along with the other spirits and creatures of the depths, have been angered by attempts to find the legendary Star of the Sea. Over the course of the show, the spirits unleash their fury across the land, on every side of the guests. This is demonstrated via a wide array of effects, including lighting, projection effects across the land’s structures, and of course the lagoon fountains themselves. Of particular interest are the simulated "pipe bursts" in the steampunk area of the land. These specially built "pipes" appear to bend out of shape as something moves through them (using motors underneath their flexible surfaces) until water finally shoots out from multiple openings, over guests heads!
The show culminates with a menacing, dimly illuminated head and neck of the Leviathan rising from the water, before a blindingly bright light pierces through the fog and mist from the other side of the water - the Star of the Sea. The Star calms the spirits and restores temporary harmony as the Leviathan sinks back beneath the surf. The Star then appears to lower back into the sea, causing the entire lagoon to glow yellow and gold. As the scene fades to black again, small points of light glimmer and sparkle beneath the surface. The Star is still out there, waiting to be found.
