The adventurers in Discovery Cove have yet to abandon their centuries-long quest for the Star of the Sea, and they're looking for volunteers to help them in their search. You're invited to join them in their mission, but do so at your own peril. There are whispers of dangers lurking beneath the surface, and rumors that the ancient Leviathan has awakened to guard its treasured Star.
"Adventurers Wanted" read many of the signs in the Steampunk District of Discovery Cove. "See O.S.H.U.N. headquarters for information." The Oceanic Society of Hunters and Underwater Navigators was originally founded as a branch of S.E.A., but tensions between the founder Cornelius Hammerhead and fellow members of SEA led to his expulsion from the society and the severing of ties between S.E.A. and O.S.H.U.N. This didn't spell the end of the organization however, as Hammerhead relocated to Discovery Cove after hearing legends of an elusive Star of the Sea. O.S.H.U.N. developed into a shady hub for a wide range of explorers, from newbies trying to make a name for themselves to bad characters and disgruntled veterans of the field looking to make a quick buck.
Guests entering the disorganized, questionably lit O.S.H.U.N. headquarters to volunteer find themselves walking among strewn about creates, barrels, and gizmos. Keen eyes may notice that some of these shipments were "borrowed" from distinguished S.E.A. members, stamped with names of places like Mystic Point and Tumbleweed.
As they progress deeper into the maze of rooms and passageways, guests may notice leaky pipes running along the ceiling, or perhaps overhear explorers behind a door arguing about whether the Leviathan is real or merely a myth.
Eventually, guests find themselves in a large room of switchbacks. An animatronic Cornelius Hammerhead stands on an elevated platform to the left, and gives guests an overview of what they've signed up for. In addition to the "legally required safety information", he gives a nonchalant overview of the Star, mentioning how "some old guys found something written in a cave about it", before quickly moving on to the fact that "if you get the Star, we'll sell it off and I'll mak- I mean, we'll make a fortune!"
Guests soon arrive in the loading zone, a boiler room deep underground in central Discovery Cove.
The attraction uses the same ride system as Shanghai Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure. Guests' boats are trackless and turn towards points of interest throughout the ride, including a 50-foot backwards drop during the attraction's finale. An Omnimover on steroids, if you will.
Once guests are safely onboard, their boats slowly progress through some mysterious caverns. Paying homage to the Rainbow Caverns Mine Train that used to run nearby in the park, these caverns are illuminated in an array of colors matching those seen each night during the Spirits of the Depths show. A variety of mythical creatures are on display here, of the sort the ancient civilizations recorded.
Soon, the boats round a bend and see before them a large tentacle moving across the ceiling. While their attention is drawn upwards, the boat plunges down a drop, through a screen of mist with bubble projections. As guests move "underwater", their search for the Star begins in earnest. The creatures here in these depths are much more hostile, and their actions rock guests' boats as they progress at a more frantic pace.
After narrowly escaping a large squid, guests round a bend into a tall room containing the final show scene. Here sits the Star of the Sea, resting atop a tall rocky pillar. However, as quickly as it comes into view, the Leviathan appears, a giant animatronic moving out from the darkness between guests and the Star. Its tentacles reach down from behind and above guests, and the boats accelerate to the right. Unfortunately, the Leviathan is just as quick, and a tentacle appears to rise up and push the boats backwards, sending them backwards down a 50-foot drop into darkness.
The growls of the Leviathan echo around guests as they move slowly through dark caverns to the unloading zone, disembarking for now, but eager to return again. Guests then make their way back to the surface via ramps, while their boats take a hidden lift hill back up to the loading zone.
