In this lesson, students learn that the Bible word "truth" means reality.
Devotion
John 17:17 “Sanctify them by the truth. Your word is truth."
The Greek word translated as truth can also be translated reality. It is popular in our day to say everyone is entitled to their own truth. That's just silly. Can you imagine if I were to say that part of my truth is that 2+2=5? How would all the people be able to understand each other if all were to choose their own truth?
Jesus makes it clear when He prays that His father would cleanse us with the truth of His Word. Let's go through some of the ways He cleanses us.
In the church service and in our prayers we confess that we are sinful and have sinned. Immediately after that we are told that our sins have been forgiven by the death of Christ on the cross. In the same church service, we learn how to make our walk through life closer to the way He would have us go. The way we know to go is of course shown us in the Bible.
When we meet other people in the world, they sometimes deny they are sinful. Those folks won't appreciate what Jesus has done for them until they recognize they need a Savior. Jesus says they are pigs to whom the Gospel of forgiveness is useless.
Other times we meet people who believe their sin is greater than Jesus can forgive. The truth they need to hear is that Jesus died for all sins of all people of all time. There is no sin that is unforgivable.
So Jesus prayer for His disciples and us shows His love for us. Therefore we can pray with Him, Sanctify us through the truth, Your word is truth.

The lesson
28 Early in the morning, the Jews led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium. They did not enter the Praetorium themselves, so that they would not become ceremonially unclean. (They wanted to be able to eat the Passover meal.) 29 So Pilate went out to them and said, “What charge do you bring against this man?”
30 They answered him, “If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.”
31 Pilate told them, “Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law.”
The Jews said, “It’s not legal for us to put anyone to death.” 32 This happened so that the statement Jesus had spoken indicating what kind of death he was going to die would be fulfilled.
33 Pilate went back into the Praetorium and summoned Jesus. He asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
34 Jesus answered, “Are you saying this on your own, or did others tell you about me?”
35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?”
36 Jesus replied, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight so that I would not be handed over to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not from here.”
37 “You are a king then?” Pilate asked.
Jesus answered, “I am, as you say, a king. For this reason I was born, and for this reason I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”
38 “What is truth?” Pilate said to him.
