Matthew 26:26-28 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
“Get Together with Jesus”
Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to get together with Jesus on a regular basis?
You know how much you struggle with your faith (or lack thereof). You know how much you struggle to love God with all your heart, soul, and mind. You know how much you struggle with loving your neighbor. You know how much you struggle with sin—especially: that sin!
Wouldn’t it be nice to get together with Jesus and have Him personally forgive you that sin and all your other struggles?
Well my friend; what if I told you that you can get together with Jesus on a regular basis? It’s true! In fact, the Thursday before Easter: Maundy Thursday, celebrates the anniversary of one of the most important ways Jesus made available for you to have your sins forgiven by Him (personally!) and have your faith strengthened anew by Him (personally!): the Lord’s Supper!
How can bodily eating and drinking do such great things? Certainly not just eating and drinking do these things, but the words written here: “Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.” These words, along with the bodily eating and drinking, are the main thing in the Sacrament. Whoever believes these words has exactly what they say: “forgiveness of sins.”
Jesus died on the Cross a long, long time ago. You still struggle with your faith and that sin today! How can what Jesus did 2,000 years ago help you now? He gave you his Word in the Bible, and He gave you His Sacraments: His Word combined with an earthly element to give you an extra “get together” with everything He won on the cross, so you’ll never have a doubt in your mind that everything Jesus ever did—He did for you personally!
Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper Himself on the night before He was crucified to strengthen and preserve your faith unto life everlasting—personally! Jesus gives His true body and blood under the bread and wine to give you His forgiveness—personally!
Martin Luther observed that when you know exactly what is involved with the Lord’s Supper, you’ll beg your pastor to give it to you and come running when he does. It’s Maundy Thursday; time to get together with Jesus!

14 When the hour had come, Jesus reclined at the table with the twelve apostles. 15 He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer, 16 for I tell you, I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
