In this lesson, students learn that The Lord's supper helps us remember.
Devotion
John 2: 16-22
16 To those selling doves he said, “Get these things out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a place of business!” 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”[b] 18 So the Jews responded, “What sign are you going to show us to prove you can do these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again.” 20 The Jews said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple! And you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But Jesus was speaking about the temple of his body. 22 When Jesus was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this. Then they believed the Scripture and what Jesus had said.
Twice in the text for today, the disciples remembered something from the Scripture. The word "remember" is used 253 times in the Bible (68 for "forget.") Sometimes it tells us that God remembers something. But more often it is used by God as a direction to us to remember something. We often forget, so God helps us remember something.
What a beautiful remembrance He makes for us in the Lord's Supper. He shed His blood for us. He gave His body for us. It seems we spend a lot of time remembering our sins and forgetting His forgiveness. May we always remember Him and His promises, to be with us, to forgive our sins, and to bring us home to Him in heaven.
23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night when he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said,[d] “This is my body, which is[e] for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after the meal, he also took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new testament[f] in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
