I moved to Boise in 2016 and planned on pursuing Masters in Health Science at Boise State University. I got this exciting opportunity to pursue Graduate Certificate in College Teaching in Spring 2017. Being interested to teach and having a strong passion for human anatomy and physiology,I was constantly in search of teaching opportunities at Boise State University. During this search process, I came across the following opportunities:
- Tutor - TRiO Rising Scholars, Boise State University - This was the first opportunity to private tutor first generation students and English language learners subjects such as BIO 227 and BIO 228, which are Human Anatomy and Physiology. As this was one-on-one it was largely customized to meet student needs and help them succeed. Teaching pedagogy included analogies and examples from everyday settings to enhance understanding of core concepts.
- Guest Lecturer - Bio 228, Biological Sciences, Boise State University - As part of the Graduate Certificate in College Teaching I had this wonderful opportunity to guest lecture a lab for BIO 228. The lab section of this class consisted of 30 students and the lecture was for 3 hours. This was my first opportunity to teach in a classroom setting and plan a three hour class. This involved careful consideration of learning outcomes and aligning activities and formative assessments to those learning outcomes. To view the lesson plan for this guest lecture, click here.
- Co-instructor - HLTHST 382, Research Methods in Health Science, Boise State University - As part of the Graduate Certificate in College Teaching, I co-instructed Research Methods in Health Science to undergraduate students at Boise State University. This involved planning the entire course by backward course design, that is, aligning activities and assessments to pre-determined learning outcomes. I also designed a student-centric syllabus for this course which aligns very well with the best practices. I used a variety of formats and methods to foster student engagement and learning. Active learning strategies were a key component of every lecture. Formative assessments were also conducted at regular intervals to gauge student learning and help us reflect on our teaching practices. To ensure an inclusive environment, use of a variety of activities in different formats was done. To view the syllabus and course design table click on the links below.
