Reflecting on past things has helped me become a better individual and educator. The following strategies are used as part of being a reflective practitioner
- Maintaining a Teaching Log - Keeping a log of every class taught and how things went, helped me to plan my future lectures. This log illustrates what went well, and what did not work and how I could improve upon the next time when same activity is done in class.
- Formative assessments - These are not only a good way to assess student learning but also an efficient way to reflect upon teaching pedagogies and styles. It helps us plan future course of the lectures and shape lectures according to student needs to enhance learning.
- Peer Feedback - As part of the certificate program we had the opportunity to watch our peers teach and I received invaluable feedback on my teaching from my peers. I also learnt a lot and received some great ideas watching my peers teach. It was a great learning experience.
- Mid-semester Assessment Protocol (MAP) - This was another powerful strategy to help reflect on my teaching skills where I received valuable feedback from students. It helped me to plan future teaching pedagogy in the course to benefit the students to the fullest.
- Course Evaluations - End of semester course evaluations provided insights into what was appreciated by the students and what was not thoroughly useful. It helped me to reflect on my own skills as a teacher and what things need to be changed or improved upon. For a glimpse of my course evaluations click here
