Importance of Teaching Social Studies
The primary purpose of Social Studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an independent world.
The overall instructional goals of Social Studies are often related to the following concerns.
* To prepare students for a changing world.
* To broaden student’s perspective and understanding of the community, state, nation, and world.
* To provide students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities they need in both their personal and public lives.
* To help students relate to and understand the subject matter content of history and social sciences including knowledge, skills, and values that are characteristic of social studies’ subject matter.
* To contribute to the students’ understanding of what it means to live in a complex and pluralistic society.
* To provide students with an understanding of the means and processes of the government. To encourage students to participate in the affairs of society and to work toward establishing a “good” society.
