This activity covers two learning objectives: (1) Understand the basic tools of [the method] & (2) Justify the choice of the method / argue for a specific method of analysis
Preparatory work (before class)
Ask students to go through Layer 1 of a method-specific digital learning object.
Set up an online quiz with 6-8 questions using an interactive tool such as Kahoot, Mentimeter, Socrative, etc.
Student answers will serve as a launching pad for the in-class discussion.
Quiz contents:
Create 2-3 multiple-choice questions on key terms and tools of analysis for the method in question.
Create 2 open-ended questions asking students to read a short data snippet (e.g. an advertisement, a news title, a social media post, etc.) and explain which tool of analysis they would use and why.
Optional: consider including 2-3 true/ false statements about the basic tools of the method of analysis.
During class (50 min)
10 min - Introduce the quiz and its purpose.
Explicitly link to learning objectives 1 and 2 above.
Give students time to answer the questions.
25-30 min - Discussion of student answers.
To facilitate knowledge acquisition (learning objective 1), point out misunderstandings and gaps in knowledge in relation to the tools and vocabulary of the method.
To enhance justification of method choice (learning objective 2), engage with the student-provided explanations for the choice of method that you find most persuasive and explain what makes them convincing.
Optionally: bring with you a few examples of research questions suitable for the method in question, and ask students to further formulate a justification for why the method would work best.
5 min - Writing flow exercise.
To debrief, ask students to write down the main lessons of this class activity for 1-2 minutes.
Ask 2-3 students to share.
