Oxidation numbers show how many electrons are gained (negative) or lost (positive).
The oxidation numbers for ions are equal to their charge.
Ex. NaCl
Sodium ion's (Na+ ) oxidation number is +1
Chlorine ion's (Cl- ) oxidation number is -1
The oxidation numbers are what the charge would be if the more electronegative element were to take the electrons in the bond.
Ex. CO2
Carbon's oxidation number is +4
Oxygen's oxidation number is -2
Oxidation numbers can change as the result of a reaction. In the example below, the Iron is oxidized and loses electrons, increasing its oxidation number from +2 ro +3. Manganese is reduced and gains electrons, reducing its oxidation number from +7 to +2.
