Scientists can also convert non-metric units by using something called a conversion factor. A conversion factor is two equivalent values written as a fraction. This fraction is mathematically equivalent to 1, so we can multiply other values by a conversion factor without changing it's value.
Because conversion factors can be written as fractions they follow mathematics rules for fractions. If the same value appears in the numerator (top) and denominator (bottom) they can both be cancelled out. So if a unit appears in the top and bottom it can be cancelled out.
Conversion factors may be inverted because they are mathematically equal to 1. So 12 in/ 1 ft is the same as 1ft/12in. So it is important that you put the unit you want to cancel in the denominator.
