Welcome all parents, incoming freshmen, or high school student considering JROTC! We are so happy you are thinking about joining our JROTC FL-20041 family! On this page you can find helpful information, benefits, curriculum paths, and learn about Drill Camp!
If you have any questions or concerns about the courses offered within our JROTC unit please contact our Senior Aerospace Science Instructor, Lieutenant Colonel Schiffert at JROTC-R1-FL-20041@au.af.edu
By enrolling in JROTC, are you joining the military? No. Students who enroll in JROTC don't join the military. They take a JROTC class for which they receive credit.
Will my son/daughter have to serve in the military if they join high school JROTC? No. There is no commitment to serve in the armed forces if a student goes through the high school JROTC program.
Does the JROTC program recruit for the Armed Forces? No! We do not recruit for the Armed Forces. Less than 4% of the 121,000+ High School JROTC students enlist in the military after graduation; most enroll in college. However, some of our students do elect join one of the military services. If they do join, they enter the service with an accelerated promotion which means an immediate pay raise.
Is JROTC like boot camp? No. The JROTC course is a leadership and character education program that does not rely on harsh discipline techniques like a boot camp.
How much of my time will be required in JROTC? This depends on your child’s level of participation in the program. It can range from just classroom participation to about the same amount of time you put into other high school extracurricular activities (e.g. clubs, football, softball, or band).
Who teaches the students? JROTC instructors are retired from active military service. They are certified to teach JROTC in accordance with published standards from each of the military services and certified by Orange County Public Schools.
Two consecutive years of JROTC meets the graduation requirement for fine arts and gym class (Health Opportunities through Physical Education, HOPE)
Plus, 2 years JROTC & 65 or higher Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test score equals 1 College and Career Acceleration Credit
Dual Enrollment opportunities with an accredited college (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University)
Community service (students may need hours to qualify for college money opportunities)
Tutoring sessions
Clubs/Competition Teams
After school activities
Leadership opportunities
Looks good on college applications and job applications
Easy course load (Not a lot of homework)
If cadets choose to enlist in the military, wish to pursue ROTC in college, or attend a military academy, there are benefits for having participated in this AFJROTC course, such as:
Higher pay grade (go in with a higher rank = a higher salary)
Scholarship opportunities
Better chance at a nomination for one of the military academies
Rather than separating classes by grade level, we organize classes by years in JROTC or their Aerospace Science Level (AS Level). First year students are AS100, second year AS200, third year AS300, and fourth year AS400. All AS levels, with few exceptions, wear the uniform every Wednesday with Friday dedicated to Physical Training (PT). PT can vary from team sports (kickball/football/basketball/etc.) to simple exercise workouts. The course curriculum available to a cadet is based on their AS Level.
All cadets must take the standard AS100 class in their first year of JROTC. Additional in-depth curriculum information can be found here.
