Does enrolling in JROTC mean joining the military?
No. Students who enroll in JROTC are not joining the military. JROTC is an elective high school course for which students receive academic credit.
Is there a military service obligation after completing high school JROTC?
No. Participation in the JROTC program does not require or obligate a student to serve in the Armed Forces.
Does JROTC recruit students for the military?
No. JROTC is not a recruiting program. Fewer than 4% of the more than 121,000 high school JROTC students nationwide choose to enlist after graduation, with most continuing on to college. For those who do decide to join a military service, participation in JROTC may allow them to enter at an advanced rank, resulting in higher starting pay.
Is JROTC like boot camp?
No. JROTC is a leadership and character development program. It does not use boot camp–style training or harsh disciplinary methods.
How much time does JROTC require?
Time commitment depends on a student’s level of involvement. Participation may be limited to classroom instruction or may include extracurricular activities comparable to other high school programs such as clubs, athletics, or band.
Who teaches JROTC classes?
JROTC instructors are retired military professionals who are certified to teach JROTC in accordance with Department of Defense standards and approved by Orange County Public Schools.

AFJROTC at Timber Creek High School prepares students for success—academically, personally, and professionally.
AFJROTC classes are organized by years of participation, known as Aerospace Science (AS) Levels, rather than by traditional grade levels. First-year cadets are enrolled in AS100, second-year cadets in AS200, third-year cadets in AS300, and fourth-year cadets in AS400.
With few exceptions, cadets at all AS levels wear the AFJROTC uniform every Wednesday, while Fridays are designated for Physical Training (PT). PT activities may include team sports such as kickball, football, or basketball, as well as individual fitness workouts. Course content and expectations increase with each AS level.
All cadets are required to complete the AS100 course during their first year in AFJROTC. Additional detailed curriculum information can be found here.
