Coach Hanenburg is a foundational figure in TCA’s cross country program, both as a former athlete and as a longtime coach.
She competed for TCA from 2002–2006, during the program’s early years, helping establish the culture of excellence, commitment, and values that continue to define TCA cross country today. Following her high school career, she went on to run for the University of Colorado. At CU, Coach Hanenburg distinguished herself not only as a talented distance runner, but also as a leader and an exceptional student, earning multiple Academic All–Big 12 honors during her collegiate career.
In the fall of 2011, Emily returned home to TCA as an assistant coach. She coaches both cross country and track while also teaching at the high school.
Affectionately known as “Coach E,” her impact reaches far beyond workouts and race strategy. She is deeply known for her genuine care for athletes; encouraging them, supporting them, and consistently showing up for them in ways that extend well beyond coaching responsibilities. Her willingness to invest countless hours, to listen, and to walk alongside runners through both triumphs and challenges has made her an invaluable presence in the program.

The story of TCA Cross Country cannot be told without Coach Alan Versaw. As the program’s founder and head coach for over two decades, Versaw built the Titans into a state powerhouse.
“There quickly became a dynamic and understanding that this was going to be something special. We were in it together, and the kids have really sustained that success over the years. The kids running now weren't even close to being born yet when I started things up.”
— Coach Alan Versaw
Versaw’s vision and leadership led to:
7 Boys State Championships and 3 Runner-Up Finishes
14 Girls State Championships and 1 Runner-Up Finish
He recalls a pivotal moment in the program’s early years:
“The third year, things really began to start to happen... Once we did it, we all just stood there and looked at each other afterward. We soaked in what happened, and went, ‘Wow. Just where can this thing go?’”
After the 2021 season, Coach Versaw retired and passed the baton to Coach Matt Norton, who continues to lead the program with the same spirit of excellence and community.
“Alan (Versaw) started the program 20 or so years ago and gave me the keys to a finely tuned Ferrari,” said Matthew Norton, TCA cross country coach. “For me I just have to make sure I don’t drive it off the side of the road. It’s fun to be competitive as long as the kids are learning what they need to learn in pursuit of that.” -Coach Matt Norton
